Come hear about the time when “indie” filmmaking meant committed,
progressive, regional movies about ordinary people -- not two-picture
deals in Hollywood. You’ve all heard about the 70s in U.S. filmmaking,
the time of Lucas and Spielberg and all the other guys of that golden
time, making movies and breaking down the walls of the studios.

Now, hear the other side -- from Cine Manifest , a documentary intent
on telling all the truths about a radical moment in history that
tried to change society as much as movies. This is an amazing opportunity to
meet Judy Irola, a central figure in the utopian Cine Manifest film
collective. Irola is now a renowned cinematographer and Professor of
Cinematography at the University of Southern California.

Cine Manifest is having its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film
Festival and comes to UC Santa Cruz straight from that engagement.
Irola was the only woman member of this collective. Now, in a very
different day and age, she has tracked down the other members and
sought to understand their long-ago experiment.
