Indybay Feature
Indybay Code Upgraded
We have moved the site to a new server and upgraded the code to make it more flexible to allow for future changes.
Most of the changes we are making are to the admin functionality that editors use to update the site (and were written to deal with the way we now handle geographical region pages), but you may notice a few other changes. Adding events will be a bit different and you will no longer get a confirmation number (we may add it back at some point). The preview, gallery, archives and search pages will also look a bit different.
The code changes we made also make it much easier to make future changes so if you think any small change (or even major features) would make the site better, post a comment with your ideas and we may be able to implement them.

Where is the section where comments are made?
Find an article in the newswire that interests you. In order to do this, you might need to go to a feature page that interests you, whether it's a topic page like the anti-war page, or a regional page such as the central valley page. Look through the titles, and then click on an article that interests you and read it. Comments can be seen at the end of the article. There, one can post comments, or read others' comments.
Please bear in mind that this is primarily a NEWS site, not a discussion forum. Craig's List, Daily Kos, and Infoshop.org are sties that do have sections devoted to discussion.

You keep making it harder and harder for people to do anything other than be a passive consumer of indybay. You get rid of the recent comments (i know that was done a long time ago and not with this change. You don't allow for comments on calendar items. It's important because sometimes people have made major mistakes that should be corrected. And now with this change, you don't allow people to email things directly from your site. Why are you make things harder?
" you don't allow people to email things directly from your site"
The reason we dont have email isnt because we decided to take it away but mainly because I havent written it yet.
There are obvious security issues with people using an anonymous system that can email anyone a post being used for spam or harassment (and causing email to get caught by spam filters and even legal issues for the site) so the time it takes to get this back depends on someone comming up with a way for it to work that cant be abused. If you have ideas....

I like putting events on the general "newswire" with THE Clock symbol.
It is now no longer possible to go to earlier pages. Thus, if one is not checking the website several times a day, one cannot look at anything earlier. When I hit the single arrow or the double arrow, I get the same page. Essentially, all I get is what is on the front page. Going to a page such as Antiwar achieves the same result. All I get is what is on that front page. If I have to choose between the other indymedia websites and this, I prefer the others. For example, Los Angeles is very simple. All one has to do is click the newswire, then go down the list of newswire. It goes page by page to previous pages, and there are no subject pages to where things might have been moved. The rest of indymedia follows the KISS princple: Keep It Simple. As to keeping up with the news, I notice this week there is no feature in the center column on the Palestinian crisis. Thus, for now, Indybay is not a top priority. And, despite all the many layers on this website, the 9/11 Inside Job still has no separate page as does Portland Indymedia. At the very least, fix the page turning so we can go back at least 2 full days, which we cannot do now.
On which page are you having the problem with paging. Add the url of the probem page in a comment and it will be fixed quicker.
The only pages with paging like that I can think of are:
http://indybay.org/archives/archived_blurb_list.php?page_id=12
and
http://indybay.org/news/?news_item_status_restriction=3&include_events=1&include_posts=1&page_id=12
and both work in my browser
but there are a lot of pages on the site so Im probably just missing the one you have the problem with...
(or its a broswer specific problem in which case if those above two links have paging which doesnt work can you provide the version of the browser you are using?)

Thank you, Tech Person, for your interest. I just went to Breaking News and I tried to use both the single arrow and double arrow and stayed on the same page at http://www.indybay.org/news/index.php?page_number=0&parent_item_id=&news_item_status_restriction=46046&media_type_grouping_id=0&topic_id=0®ion_id=0&next_page.x=11&next_page.y=5
I did the same with Local News at
http://www.indybay.org/news/?news_item_status_restriction=3&include_events=1&include_posts=1&page_id=12
and Global News at:
http://www.indybay.org/news/?news_item_status_restriction=5&include_events=0&include_posts=1&page_id=12
The browser is Internet Explorer.
Thanks again.

Which version of IE and with which OS? Ive tested that page with several versions and they all work. It is a submit image button rather than a link but that should be supported back to versions 3 and myabe earlier. The site has been having DB problems and the last page link can be slow but the next page one shoudl be really fast most of the time.
Ok I can see some formating problems in a few versions of IE so it could relate. I mainly code the backend code so will have to talk to people more familiar with browser specific display issues to help fix this.
We fixed a problem with IE6 with pages getting cut apart in a strange way but there remains the posted about problem that seems like its is specific to IE on macs... I have a solution but it will take several days to test and roll out.
The page turn problem is finally fixed. Hopefully it will last. Thanks. so much.
