Cannabis activist Jim Belushi has a birthday soon on June 15
Back in the late 60s and perhaps the early 70s, at times John and Jim Belushi used to go the "Lord & Lady Q Billiards," in Wheaton, Illinois, while they resided there.
Cannabis activist Jim Belushi has a birthday soon on June 15
By Lynda Carson - May 16, 2024
Oakland, CA - Oakland has become well known locally and across the nation for its numerous cannabis dispensaries.
On May 10, 2021, cannabis activist and actor Jim Belushi wrote, “To the people just finding out I became a cannabis farmer, I have this to say - if my brother John was a pothead, he’d still be with us today. I got into cannabis because I believe in the medicine, and I believe it can help me heal my traumas. That’s the “mission from God.”
As a cannabis activist, Jim Belushi has become well known across the nation, and around the world.
Reportedly, recently the Biden administration announced plans to reclassify Marijuana, a.k.a. cannabis, pot, weed, reefer, hemp, Mary Jane, etc…. However, it appears that they are a bit late with their plans, and reportedly it is not good enough to really help out the legal growers / sellers in the marijuana industry, but apparently the marijuana industry will get a tax break.
Born James Adam Belushi, on June 15, 1954, Jim Belushi used to reside in Wheaton, Illinois, with his family, and his older brother “actor John Belushi.” They both went to school at Central High School in Wheaton, and afterwards they both went to a nearby small local community college called the College of DuPage (COD) near Wheaton, where they joined a drama class before they found their war to the Second City Theatre on Welles Street, in Old Town Chicago, near Pipers Alley.
Years ago in the late 60s, and possibly the early 70s, while residing in Wheaton, the Belushi brothers could be found at times hanging out at the “Lord & Lady Q Billiards,” in downtown Wheaton, affectionately known as “‘the pool hall.” The local teens and others used to go there to score, find the next party, and play pool or ping pong, while listening to the latest top 100 hits on the juke box. At times, before entering the pool hall, John Belushi could be seen parking his motorcycle in front of the pool hall, before he would head inside to join the crowd looking for a good time.
Wheaton was a dry town at the time, and alcohol was illegal. However, there were plenty of drugs to be found, including cannabis (pot) for those in need, and LSD (Acid), which may have still been legal until 1967, if I recall.
Indeed, not only was Wheaton a dry town years ago when the Belushi brothers were there, but it was very conservative, with Wheaton College, and Billy Graham being very active there. Now there may, or may not be a bunch of fascist Trump supporters at Wheaton College, but I am not certain.
Years ago, Wheaton was also the same small town where famed reporter Bob Woodward used to reside in the home owned by his father Judge Alfred Woodward, along with his sister named Wendy Woodward, near Northside Park.
I have been to one or two parties of Wendy Woodward many years ago in the 70s while she still lived with her dad Alfred the judge, while her brother, reporter Bob Woodward was in hot pursuit of Richard Nixon a.k.a. Tricky Dick. Bob Woodward also went to Central High School in Wheaton, which was the same high school that the Belushi brothers went to.
Coincidently, actor Bob Odenkirk, of Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul,, grew up nearby in Naperville, Illinois (7 miles from Wheaton), and Odenkirk also went to the College of DuPage for a while, the same local community college where the Belushi brothers went to. Odenkirk has probably been to Wheaton many, many times in his youth, and had to go through Wheaton from Naperville, to get to Glenn Ellyn, where the College of DuPage was located.
The College of DuPage started its own newspaper in 1967 called the Courier, which in later issues had advertisements for the “Lord and Lady Q Billiards,” in Wheaton.

For what it is worth, when I last saw Jim Belushi in person he was driving a volkswagon bug. At that time, I believe that he lived above a bar nearby in Naperville, called Odee’s? From what I recall, Jim was a close friend of an old friend of mine named Graham Cadwallader (passed away), who also was from Wheaton. That last time I saw Jim Belushi in person (not on TV or movie), he picked me up as I was hitch-hiking to Chicago one afternoon while he was on his way to the Second City Theatre in Chicago. I am not claiming that I knew the Belushi brothers well, but it was really cool years ago to run into them at times at the “Lord & Lady Q Billiards,” and that Jim Belushi picked me up while I was hitch-hiking one day, before he was blessed with fame and fortune.
This was long before I moved to Oakland, and started listening in to KPFA radio 94.1 FM, in Berkeley.
On another note, back in 1974, I went to a fantastic Frank Zappa concert in Naperville https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYlZU-09IkA — https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/frank-zappa/1974/merner-field-house-naperville-il-1bd02558.html .

More about Lord & Lady Q Billiards in Wheaton, COD, the Belushi brothers...
On the bottom of page 9 (see link below) reportedly during July 1971, Lord & Lady Q Billiards had 20 pool tables, and the proprietors were Bob Kortum and his wife Donna (reportedly both passed away years later.)

I am not certain when “Lord & Lady Q Billiards,” closed down, or why. From what I recall years ago, allegedly a naked woman fell through some ceiling tiles from above the pool tables, and that she landed on a pool table down below and was injured. Rumors were flying around Wheaton years ago that someone was operating a whore house at the pool hall, upstairs above the pool tables. If the rumors were true, it is my belief that the pool hall closed down after the woman was injured who allegedly landed on a pool table, and it may have been shut down by the Fire Marshall, or City of Wheaton, but I am not certain.
Asides from the advertisements in the student newspaper from the College of DuPage called The Courier, for the “Lord & Lady Q Billiards,” it is real interesting for me to see an advertisement for a concert with Neil Diamond and The Ides of March on page 6, for only $3.00 for non COD students, or $1.50 for COD students.
It was a great loss for people in Wheaton when John Belushi passed away.

It was a real shock to the system when John Belushi died. At the time John Belushi died from an overdose in Hollywood, I was also working nearby in Hollywood repairing guitars and stringed instruments for recording artists and public figures (rock stars), people struggling in local bands trying to find their fame and fortune, students from the Guitar Institute of Technology (G.I.T.), etc… Click here for details: https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2020/01/02/18829401.php .

More About Wheaton & Lord & Lady Q Billiards
Lord & Lady Q Billiards Was Open 7 Days A Week
By Lynda Carson
In an advertisement of a so-called “Valuable Coupon” for Lord & Lady Q Billiards, in the November 14, 1968 issue of The Courier, a student newspaper of the College of DuPage, it claimed that a free coupon from America’s most beautiful family billiard room is offering this certificate entitling the bearer to one half hour of pocket billiards. Good anytime except Friday night, and Saturday. Only one certificate per table. Good until November 24. Open 7 days a week, 12 noon - 1 am.
Since Wheaton was a dry town, and there were not any bars, nor was alcohol available in the stores, Lord & Lady Q Billiards was a very busy place, with hoards of teenagers and young adults going there to score, or who may be going there in search of a good time, a game of pool, or some fun playing ping pong on one of the two ping pong tables at the pool hall. Music from the juke box was usually loudly blasting the latest hits in the pool hall, for those who were stoned and loved listening to some of their favorite music at that time.
Being open until 1 a.m., in the morning 7 days a week, the pool hall provided the local teens in Wheaton a much needed place to hang out at night. A place to go in search of a good time, or perhaps to score some drugs, to find out where the next party was at, and possibly hook-up with a date. There were hustlers there willing to take your money in a game of pool for a buck a game or more, or some people were hustlers at the ping pong tables looking for others to play for some money. Two brothers Abel and BB Macias of Wheaton who later became professional race horse jockeys, were some of the hottest ping pong players in town, and they were often looking for someone willing to challenge them at a game of ping pong for some money.
Marty Boyd used to love playing pool at the pool hall, until he had an accident at work one day, and was electrocuted while he was high up on a crane working on some electrical wires, and got electrocuted somehow. This was a terrible incident that shook many people up at the time because Marty was very popular, and was a really cool dude.
The local Wheaton Theater, Dunkin’ Donuts, Cock Robbin hamburger stand, Yankee Doodle hamburger stand, Wheaton Restaurant, the Around The Clock restaurant, Wheaton Bowl, Bob’s Big Boy restaurant with their car hops, or the nearby In-Between Store that offered bags of freshly popped popcorn, or a huge variety of candy day and night, could not compete with the Lord & Lady Q Billiards (pool hall) at the time back in the late 60s, and early 70s.
Wheaton was small enough back then that a lot of people who went to the pool hall knew each other from the different schools that they may have gone to such as Wheaton North High School, or Central High School where John and Jim Belushi, and famed journalist Bob Woodward went to years ago.
But Wheaton was very conservative and run by the Republican Party back then. Wheaton College, and Billy Graham, and televangelist Jerry Falwell and the so-called moral majority had a lot influence in Wheaton back then in those days. Indeed, Wheaton had so many churches in it that I believe at one point, it had more churches in it per square mile than just about any other city in America.
As a result, many of the cool people in Wheaton, including John and Jim Belushi, Wendy Woodward (Bob Woodward’s sister), and many others managed to escape from Wheaton, and move to some place else that was not so bigoted, right-wing, or conservative.
Wheaton was very segregated years ago, with most of the blacks and Latinos in town living on the south side of the railroad tracks running through town. If someone wanted to build some apartments in the north side of town, the locals would put up a huge fight to stop the apartment buildings from ever being built, because they were afraid that the blacks or Mexicans would move into their neighborhood.
Republicans had so much power in Wheaton years ago, that on election day if you were a Republican and worked for the City of Wheaton, you could get some time off to go and vote. But if you were a Democrat, they would not cut you any slack, and you would have to remain on the job on election day if you worked for the City Water Department, or any other branch of the city government.
Sad to say, I recall when my own family put up a huge fight years ago when someone tried to build some apartment buildings in the neighborhood where many of my relatives lived (home owners) near each other. This included my grandfather (passed away) who was wealthy, owned a lot of properties in Wheaton, and he lived with his family in a large beautiful windmill house built by himself, my dad, and his two brothers years ago. Sorry to say, my grandfather, my dad, and his two brothers have passed away through the years, but while they were alive, they and others were very successful years ago in stoping an apartment building project from happening in our neighborhood years ago.
In nearby Carol Stream which is right next door to Wheaton, and it was hard to tell that you are not in Wheaton anymore when you enter Carol Stream, it had many factories there years ago. This included Motorola, Morton Salt, Container Corporation of America, the Myercord Company (decal manufacturers), and other large factories. But they were so uptight there about drugs, that some of the factories including Motorola hired Narcs to work on the assembly lines. The Narcs would become so friendly with the people they met on the factory assembly lines, that they would be invited to peoples homes for dinner, or picnics and parties at times, before the Narc would end up arresting them for possession or sales of drugs, or pot. Some friends of mine at Motorola got busted by a Narc at the factory years ago shortly after I moved away from Wheaton, and moved to Arizona many years ago.
To say the least, I was very happy to finally escape Wheaton, Illinois, many years ago, with its freezing cold winters, conservative values, and right-wing extremist attitudes. I have not been back there since around 1983.
However, I still have some good memories from hanging out at Lord & Lady Q Billiards in Wheaton, where John and Jim Belushi also used to hang out there sometimes many years ago, including many other cool people.
