Ann Coulter event is back on after UC Berkeley finds 'protected venue'

The university has reversed its original decision to cancel an appearance by the rightwing figure amid concerns for safety and security

The University of California, Berkeley, has announced it has found a new “protectable venue” for the controversial rightwing speaker Ann Coulter, after initially canceling the event over security fears.

At a press conference on Thursday afternoon, the university’s chancellor, Nicholas Dirks, said that the school could host Coulter in May at the “protectable venue”.

A university spokesman, Dan Mogulof, said the venue would be on campus, though Dirks said the university would disclose the exact location at a later point. The university had drawn criticism from prominent figures on both the right and left for the cancellation, which was described as an abridgment of free speech.

“The concern is really around student safety and security,” said Dirks, “regardless of the political views of the speakers.”

Dirks added that police have “very specific intelligence regarding threats that could pose a grave danger to the speaker,” her audience and protesters. He urged Coulter to come speak at a later date, and suggested 2 May.

Coulter had originally planned to speak at the school on 27 April, but on Tuesday the vice-chancellor, Scott Biddy, sent a letter to the university’s College Republicans saying that police could not ensure her safety, nor that of audience members, protesters or students.

On Wednesday, Coulter vowed to speak in Berkeley regardless of the university’s decision, telling Fox News: “What are they going to do? Arrest me? I’m definitely giving the speech.”

Ann Coulter rejects Berkeley’s new invite — and a lawsuit may be pending

Officials at the University of California at Berkeley are offering conservative firebrand Ann Coulter a new date to make a speech on campus, but she says she can’t make it that day, and the student group that invited her is threatening to sue the school.

The university announced Wednesday that it was canceling Coulter’s appearance following several political protests in Berkeley that turned violent. But on Thursday, the university said it had found a venue where it could hold the speech on a different day, May 2, instead of the original April 27 date.

Coulter and the college Republican group arranging her event said they are rejecting the new invitation, and a lawyer, representing the organizer, has been hired.

In a series of tweets Thursday night, Coulter criticized the university, saying Berkeley officials were adding “burdensome” conditions to her speech. She said she had already spent money to hold the event on the original April 27 date and is not available May 2. She also pointed out that May 2 would coincide with a reading period before final exams, when there are no classes on campus and fewer students around.

And she vowed that she is going to speak in Berkeley on the originally planned April 27 date, whether the university approved or not.

Things are heating up rapidly on youtube on what is being called the "Battle for Berkeley 4".

Milo is planning to come back to Berkeley on I believe the 5th of May? He is calling it "Cinco De Milo" where he plans to start an occupation movement with tents; a complete mockery of our resistance during OWS.
