Call to Defend the Afrika Town Community Garden in Oakland

by Qilombo
On Saturday, March 7th, hundreds of people gathered in the garden space next to the Qilombo Community Center and "harvested and planted for spring, fed the community, made medicines, created a beautiful mural, cleaned up the neighborhood, painted red, black, green, and yellow all over the block, and put Afrika Town signs up everywhere. We are claiming our right to take over space and our right to exist." Organizers went on to say, "This is what Black lives Matter really means! This is where Black Power becomes really REAL! Now that we are taking our rightful place and creating an autonomous community for the people and by the people, of course, we are encountering resistance!"

According to event organizers, someone paid a local landscaper to tear down the garden and clear the land. Organizers are asking that people call (510) 302-9306 and demand that the garden stay.

They go on to make a call for the community to defend the land and the garden starting on Tuesday, March 10th. “In order to defend ourselves we are hosting a defense sleep over at Qilombo on Tuesday night March 10th 2015 where we will take turns guarding the garden. But we also need people to keep coming throughout the day to keep an eye on the garden and make sure nobody tries to cut it down. So come chill for a couple of hours and protect the community.”

You don't need to trespass. I moved to Detroit and BOUGHT land that was for sale. I and my partner have started to work the vacant land and will grow food. Others that went with us have started a bakery and other business ventures. My sister has renovated and old house with plans for it to be an eating establishment. Land in CA is $$. Land in Detroit can be got for less than 1,000 for a fairly large patch. Sweat equity, but in the long run, it helps our people be independent - THAT is Black Power.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
