Call to Defend the Afrika Town Community Garden in Oakland
On Saturday, March 7th, hundreds of people gathered in the garden space next to the Qilombo Community Center and "harvested and planted for spring, fed the community, made medicines, created a beautiful mural, cleaned up the neighborhood, painted red, black, green, and yellow all over the block, and put Afrika Town signs up everywhere. We are claiming our right to take over space and our right to exist." Organizers went on to say, "This is what Black lives Matter really means! This is where Black Power becomes really REAL! Now that we are taking our rightful place and creating an autonomous community for the people and by the people, of course, we are encountering resistance!"
According to event organizers, someone paid a local landscaper to tear down the garden and clear the land. Organizers are asking that people call (510) 302-9306 and demand that the garden stay.
They go on to make a call for the community to defend the land and the garden starting on Tuesday, March 10th. “In order to defend ourselves we are hosting a defense sleep over at Qilombo on Tuesday night March 10th 2015 where we will take turns guarding the garden. But we also need people to keep coming throughout the day to keep an eye on the garden and make sure nobody tries to cut it down. So come chill for a couple of hours and protect the community.”
