Celebrants Usher in Kwanzaa Holiday
California Black Farmers to Honor Founder of Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is celebrated annually from December 26th to January 1st. The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa are considered tools for addressing issues facing the African American community. In San Francisco, the cultural holiday will be held at nine different venues throughout the city.
In Sacramento, the California Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association will honor Dr. Maulana Karenga during the annual California State Capitol Kwanzaa Umoja Ceremony on the morning of December 26th; a series of other free events will be held in the state's capital the same day. Karenga played a major role in Black political and intellectual culture during the 1960s and 1970s and created the Kwanzaa holiday in 1966.
On December 29th, an Ujamaa celebration will be held in Stockton. Ujamaa means cooperative economics and is one of the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa.
