People's Park 38th Anniversary Celebration
People's Park Anniversary
On April 22nd, Berkeley celebrated the 38th anniversary of the founding of People's Park. There was music with Stratosphere68, The Flux, All Nations Singers, Country Joe McDonald and Kapakahi. There was also poetry, speakers, Art and Revolution theatre, political tables, a Food Not Bombs lunch, clowns, puppets and children's Activities. Among those speaking and tabling were activists focusing on the Berkeley oaks tree-sit, resistance to UC's sellout to BP, and anti-war organizing.

In April of 1969, an eclectic bunch of people in Berkeley, California reclaimed a piece of land owned by the University of California, dug up the asphalt parking lot there, tilled the soil, planted trees and plants, put in a swing set and benches and turned it into a park. Black Panthers, street people, elderly women and men, students, children and dogs all joined in to make the park a piece of liberated territory. It became know as People's Park. Read More
