German Mayday

by cp
The first reports are that there were thousands of police in Kreuzberg quarter of Berlin, and they quashed some mayday people.
This is a list of links to pictures of buildup to mayday and may day itself in Germany.
on April 27th, some socialist youth went around on a route forbidden by the city, put up a sign announcing free rides at the subway (their subway is on the honor system anyway), and one of them was arrested by the police in the green uniforms, who probably don't carry guns. There is a picture of a burned car here but that could be from a previous year. They mention that some Berliners prefer a less violent approach and have planned picnics: http://www.dw-world.de/english/0,3367,1432_A_1186862_1_A,00.html

German police hurt in Berlin May Day clashes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BERLIN, May 1 (Reuters) - Fifty-eight police officers were injured in clashes with May Day demonstrators early on Saturday in Berlin and 111 people were detained after violence erupted in a city park, Berlin police said.

A police spokeswoman said that 55 of the 58 injured officers were treated for minor injuries and three others went for further medical care. She said they were injured by stones and bottles thrown by left-wing anarchists.

Police are bracing for further clashes later on Saturday, as Berlin has faced May Day violence every year for the last 16 years. Last year a number of luxury cars were tipped over and set on fire, while anarchists threw stones and bottles at police.

In an attempt to prevent or limit the violence in the German capital, some 4,500 riot police from outside Berlin have joined forces with another 4,000 Berlin police officers this year.

Police said the disturbances early on Saturday, at a giant May Day celebration in the eastern district of Prenzlauer Berg, were nevertheless less violent than last year. They said a ban on bottles and cans as well as improved park lighting had helped.

"The criminal acts were almost exclusively in the park region," said another police spokesman. "There were some bottles and stones thrown."

Police said 81 people were detained for acts of violence while another 30 were taken into custody as a precaution against further violence.

BERLIN (Reuters) - German police clashed with both right-wing and left-wing demonstrators at a May Day rally on Saturday, hours after 58 police officers were injured in overnight skirmishes with protesters at a separate troublespot.

Some 2,300 members of the far-right NPD party marching in an eastern Berlin district against the European Union's enlargement were kept apart from about 500 left-wing counter-demonstrators by police wearing riot helmets.

More pictures from antinazi demo 'antifas' short for antifascismus. Do you see the long lines of police cars? That is one of the things I remember from visiting Germany. There are constantly demos of various sorts, and long lines of police cars. http://de.indymedia.org/2004/05/81912.shtml
