Fatal encounters with the cops in Oakland

By Lynda Carson - June 12, 2020

Oakland - As the protests continue in Oakland against police brutality, and killer cops, the message of the protesters grows, and it is clear that they want to divert funding from the police to the African-American community.

For years Oakland has been troubled with cops since the days of The Riders. In recent years Celeste Guap and her encounters with the cops made plenty of headlines. The recent protests against police brutality, and killer cops, have ironically resulted in more police brutality against the protesters.

Making matters worse, the protests are taking place in the midst of the coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic. These are grim times we live in.

In hope that their fate, and the fate of their relatives and friends will have a prosperous future, equality, and an end to racism, the protesters do not want anymore people to end up having fatal encounters with the cops.

Nor do they want people to have fatal encounters as a result of others having close encounters with the cops in Oakland.

Below is a list of 83 people from the year 2000 to the present who have had fatal encounters with the cops, or they died because others had encounters with the cops.

The list may or may not be complete, but it is what it is.

Hopefully, by sharing this list it will help to give people a better understanding of what has been happening in this city when some people have fatal encounters with the cops.

People have been wiling to place themselves at risk while protesting in the midst of the coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic, and hopefully it will make a difference by saving lives in the future.

Oakland police investigate state patrolmen's fatal shooting of a man who allegedly rammed their car

By Sarah Moon, CNN

Updated 10:40 AM ET, Wed June 10, 2020

(CNN)Investigators are looking into the California Highway Patrol's fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man during a traffic stop, the Oakland Police Department said.

Three CHP officers opened fire on Erik Salgado on Saturday evening in East Oakland, and a woman who was in the vehicle with Salgado was also shot and injured, police say.

The incident comes amid heightened awareness of police conduct and mass protests following the death of George Floyd in custody in Minneapolis. Protesters in Oakland also have marched to decry Salgado's killing.

Though Oakland police are leading the probe, no Oakland officers were involved, police say.

Salgado was allegedly driving a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat recklessly through an area where CHP officers were conducting a follow-up investigation to an unrelated shooting from the night before, Oakland police said in a news release.

Fatal Encounters website

Below is the Fatal Encounters website link where I was able to compile the above information from by doing a search on their database, except for the last information I gathered from CNN.

Fatal Encounters is a fantastic website, and others may want to check it out to see what is happening locally, and across the nation.

What it does not explain?

It does not explain why most of the people who are dead from the fatal encounters with the cops in Oakland are mostly African-Americans, and people of color.

A few more fatal encounters with cops in Oakland

There are many more people in Oakland who have had fatal encounters with the cops that I failed to mention, including Oscar Grant and some members of the Black Panther Party.

See some links and information below...

Additional encounters with cops in Oakland

By Lynda Carson

Below are some additional links to some more encounters with the cops of Oakland.

As protests in Oakland, and across the nation continue as people are fighting back against police brutality and killer cops, the brutality and fatal encounters involving the cops have been happening for many years.

Presently, it's possible that the people protesting in the streets currently are up against a program called Iron Fist by the FBI, who believe that African-Americans and the Black Lives Matter movement who protest against the police brutality and killer cops are what they have labeled as 'Black Identity Extremists'.

Click on link below to see the FBI plan called Iron Fist plan to go after 'Black Identity Extremists'.

During September of 2018, then Attorney General Jeff Sessions claimed that more crime will appear in the nation if the authorities listed to the Black Lives Matter movement.

After more than a decade of federal monitoring, police in Oakland are still showing signs of racial disparities in enforcement, according to the latest report. Officers, it said, were much more likely to stop and search African Americans than whites, but found suspected contraband more often on whites.
The monitor’s report, released Thursday, said Oakland police stopped 15,407 vehicles between mid-November and mid-May. Blacks were at the wheel 57 percent of the time, whites 11 percentand Latinos 21 percent. During the same period, officers stopped 1,858 pedestrians: 69 percent of them black, 10 percent white and 15 percent Latino.
Oakland’s population, according to the 2010 census, was 28 percent black, 34.5 percent white and 25.4 percent Latino.
The report also found that police searched African American motorists and their vehicles in 28 percent of their stops, compared with 5 percent for whites and 14 percent for Latinos. During pedestrian stops, African Americans were searched 48 percent of the time, whites 21 percent and Latinos 34 percent. The figures covered only searches officers chose to conduct, at their discretion, and did not include searches required by law when a suspect was being arrested or was visibly carrying a weapon.
By contrast, the report said, officers were somewhat more likely to find contraband when searching whites than blacks: 48 percent of the time in vehicle searches involving whites, compared with 46 percent for blacks, and 58 percent for searches of white pedestrians, compared with 42 percent for blacks. The figures for Latinos were 48 percent in vehicle searches and 53 percent in pedestrian searches.

Oakland police released body-camera footage Friday in two unrelated incidents that led to suspect deaths, one in which officers fatally shot an alleged carjacker and a second in which a police foot chase ended with a man wedged between two buildings.
The police-edited videos were released to The Chronicle on Friday in response to a Public Records Act request after previous requests for the videos were denied. The Chronicle posted the videos to its websites — SFGate.com and SFChronicle.com — after omitting scenes that showed the bodies.
One video shows police body-cam footage from the Aug. 12 fatal shooting of 24-year-old Nate Wilks on Martin Luther King Jr. Way near 27th Street. The footage was from the body cameras of two of the three officers involved, and each started from when they arrived on the scene and ran until moments after the suspect was shot.
A second set of videos, which were edited for time reasons, showed the July 19 police pursuit of 23-year-old Richard Linyard, who died after getting wedged between two buildings. Police officials used the footage to dispute rumors on social media that Linyard’s death was the result of force by officers.

Oakland has opened an investigation into the handling of a fatal police shooting after lawyers for the officer accused the Police Department and the city attorney's office of withholding a report favorable to the officer, officials said Monday.

An Oakland police officer shot a man who was armed with a knife Friday, department officials said.
The shooting happened on the 1000 block of 88th Avenue about 9:45 a.m. Two officers in a marked cruiser — one a rookie officer, the other that officer’s field training officer — were on patrol when they were flagged down by a witness reporting a man who was armed with a knife and “acting erratically,” said Officer Frank Bonifacio, an Oakland police spokesman.
The officers found the man, and “a confrontation ensued” that resulted in one of the officers opening fire, Bonifacio said. Officials did not say if it was the rookie or the training officer who shot the man.
The man, identified by relatives as Corey Pollard, 28, was hit by gunfire and taken to a hospital for treatment, but his condition was not immediately known. Family members told reporters at the scene that Pollard had a history of mental illness. They also said he was shot several times.

Shootings by Oakland Police, OPD brutality, and settlements

By Lynda Carson - June 15, 2020

I believe that I am wrapping this up with some more additional links revealing some of the shootings by the cops in Oakland, police brutality in Oakland, and a number of settlements that had to be payed by the tax payers and the City of Oakland.

The people of Oakland have been getting screwed for many years by the system that protects the cops, and things need to change.

In regards to all the vicious police brutality happening across the nation against the protesters and the Black Lives Matter movement since the murder of George Floyd occurred by killer cops, it may be the result of an FBI program known as Iron Fist, a program to attack the so-called “Black Identity Extremists.”

It appears that the Trump regime has brought back the old Cointel-Pro program, revised and updated to go after African-Americans and the Black Lives Matter movement, as they ignore the violent white supremacists, and Neo-Nazis. See information and links further below...

Additionally, I added an old Black Panther Party video from the National Archives that was filmed in Oakland many years ago that helps us to see what was happening in Oakland back in the 60s, in contrast to the world we live in now.

Plus a few additional appropriate links...

Sorry for any repeats...

Oakland cop was cleared in earlier killing

An Oakland police officer who shot and killed an unarmed drunken-driving suspect last week was cleared of wrongdoing in a similar fatal shooting last New Year’s Eve, authorities said Monday.
Officer Hector Jimenez, who graduated from the police academy in February 2007, fired numerous shots at 27-year-old Mack “Jody” Woodfox III early Friday, hitting him in the back, said Oakland homicide Lt. Ersie Joyner.
Jimenez believed Woodfox had been reaching into his waistband for a gun after Woodfox jumped from his car and ran after a chase that ended at East 17th Street and Fruitvale Avenue in the Fruitvale district.
Woodfox was not armed, however, and his relatives say they intend to sue police. John Burris, the family’s attorney, said he also plans to ask Alameda County prosecutors, the FBI and the U.S. attorney to prosecute Jimenez on criminal charges, including murder and civil-rights violations.
Jimenez was one of two officers who shot and killed Andrew Moppin, 20, at 47th Avenue and International Boulevard on New Year’s Eve. Moppin was also not armed, but Jimenez and the other officer, who wasn’t identified, believed he had been reaching for his waistband, authorities said.

Police officials have not identified the officer, but sources said he was Officer Miguel Masso.
The incident began when Masso and his partner saw Blueford and two companions on the 1900 block of 90th Avenue shortly after midnight and suspected Blueford was hiding a gun, police said.

One person was still at large as night fell, and two others had been detained, said Officer Jeff Thomason, a spokesman for the Police Department. Officers were conducting a search through a neighborhood near Highland Hospital for the suspect.

The incident began around 2:15 p.m. when undercover officers spotted a car on 35th Avenue that they believed was linked to a shooting last week. The officers asked a marked unit to pull the car over, Thomason said.
The driver refused to stop and led police on a chase of about 3 miles before crashing into a home on the 3300 block of 13th Avenue, near the hospital and Interstate 580, Thomason said. The home suffered minor damage, and no one inside was hurt.

After the four people in the car jumped out and fled on foot, two police officers opened fire and shot one of them to death, Thomason said.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – The city of Oakland has tentatively agreed to pay $1.4 million to the family of a homeless man with mental health issues who was fatally shot by Oakland police officers two years ago.
The City Council approved the tentative agreement in closed session last week but won’t have a final vote on it until a public council meeting in the next week or two, City Councilman Noel Gallo said Tuesday.
Oakland attorney John Burris filed a wrongful death officer last year on behalf of the family of 32-year-old Joshua Pawlik, who was shot multiple times in the 900 block of 40th Street at about 7 p.m. on March 11, 2018.
Pawlik had been sleeping on the ground and when officers, who were behind a large military vehicle, wakened Pawlik he sat up partway but officers opened fire on him before he had a chance to respond, Burris said.
Burris said Pawlik had a gun on his lap but he doesn’t think he ever grabbed it and pointed it at the officers.
