During COVID-19 pandemic the California Guitar Trio releases a new music video

By Lynda Carson - May 8, 2020

Oakland - Earlier today, I received an email from the California Guitar Trio (CGT) that contained a link to a new music video called Droning Circulation that has the music of CGT in it.

A number of years ago, Ervin Somogyi, Oakland’s Master Luthier (guitar builder), built some beautiful handmade acoustic guitars for the California Guitar Trio (CGT), including band members Hideyo Moriya, Bert Lams, and Paul Richards.

During a 2010 interview by Kirk Albrecht, Paul Richards of the California Guitar Trio said, “We have all played guitars by Ervin Somogyi, which are wonderful instruments.”

Paul Richards can be seen holding a Somogyi guitar (middle guitar) in a photo in a CGT website.

In a message from CGT on one of their websites, in part it states, “Like many of you, our lives have been severely impacted by Covid-19. Many of our family and friends have been directly affected by the virus, and we’ve suffered devastating losses in both our own communities and our global community. Also, like so many of our fans, our livelihood has been altered - drastically and indefinitely. Because of this situation we had to cancel all of our shows for the foreseeable future. We are currently unable to participate in our favorite part of being working musicians - which is traveling to your local venue to play for you. We want to thank you for supporting our music and coming out to share time with us all these wonderful years.

During the past year, while touring, we recorded our new album ELEGY at Airbnb houses in West Hollywood, Chicago, Bryn Mawr and Montreal. In addition to our own compositions and a few covers, we focused on music written by friends we met during our travels in the past 29 years. The album features special guests Tony Levin, Davide Rossi and Fabio Mittino.”

In the newly released music video called Droning Circulation the music is performed by the California Guitar Trio and Tony Levin (bassist).

The music video has some spectacular visuals in it along with the splendid, beautiful, unique, fantastic music of the California Guitar Trio.

Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic Has Made Life Difficult For Musicians And Luthiers/Guitar Builders

The coronavirus pandemic has been a great financial hardship on musicians and luthiers/guitar builders in Oakland, the Bay Area, and beyond.

In recent days, Oakland cellist Michael Graham, a member of Vitamin Em, also sent me an email with a link to a recently finished music video of the song called Beautiful Child, written by the founder of Vitamin Em, Emily Onderdonk.

The musicians played together on-line while sheltering-in-place, and it took over 50 hours to create the music video of the song called Beautiful Child.

Vitamin Em is part of the local music scene in Oakland, Berkeley, and the Bay Area, that puts a new spin on funk, jazz, R&B, Soul and fiddle music.

Additionally, the music video of the song called Beautiful Child has been submitted to the 2020 National Public Radio (NPR), Tiny Desk competition.
