On Thursday April 11, Julian Assange, age 47, the founder of Wikileaks was arrested at the Embassy of Ecuador in London by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) after the Ecuadorian government’s withdrawal of asylum for Assange.
According to a release from the Metropolitan Police, world famous publisher, political activist and whistle blower, Julian Assange, was arrested on a warrant issued by Westminster Magistrates’ Court dating back to June 29, 2012, for failure to surrender to the court.
The Metropolitan Police claim, “He has been taken into custody at a central London police station where he will remain, before being presented before Westminster Magistrates' Court as soon as is possible.
The MPS had a duty to execute the warrant, on behalf of Westminster Magistrates' Court, and was invited into the embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government's withdrawal of asylum.”
Assange Was Double Crossed By Ecuadorian Government:
Double crossed by the the Ambassador and the Ecuadorian government's withdrawal of asylum, in response, in an urgent tweet WikiLeaks said, “Ecuador has illegally terminated Assange political asylum in violation of international law. He was arrested by the British police inside the Ecuadorian embassy minutes ago.” The arrest video is available here.
Additional April 11, 2019 tweets from WikiLeaks said, “Assange has been arrested in relation to a US extradition request for "conspiracy with Chelsea Manning" for publishing Iraq War Logs, Cablegate, Afghan War Logs, precisely the persecution for which he was granted asylum under the 1951 Refugee Convention in 2012. @unhumanrights”
“Julian Assange will be taken to Westminster Magistrates court this afternoon. He has been arrested under a US extradition warrant for conspiracy with @xychelsea for publishing classified information revealing war crimes in 2010.”
In a different April 4, 2019 tweet from WikiLeaks foretelling Assange’s soon to occur arrest, it said, “BREAKING: A high level source within the Ecuadorian state has told @WikiLeaks that Julian Assange will be expelled within "hours to days" using the #INAPapers offshore scandal as a pretext--and that it already has an agreement with the UK for his arrest.”
Additionally, Defend WikiLeaks is seeking your assistance in defending Julian Assange and the media from the on-going threat of the right-wing fascist Trump regime.
Assange and WikiLeaks made headlines across the globe in 2010, by exposing and publishing leaked secret documents allegedly provided by Chelsea Manning. Secret documents and information revealing possible war crimes by the U.S. military in Iraq. Assange is presently wanted by the fascist Trump regime and the U.S. government. Meanwhile, Chelsea Manning is currently locked up behind bars by the fascist right-wing Trump regime after she recently refused to testify in front of a federal grand jury investigating the release of secret documents and thousands of classified military logs by WikiLeaks.
Assange was wanted by the British government for breaking the terms of a bail bond agreement and fleeing to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. He has been living under asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since 2012, after he faced allegations of sexual assault and rape that were later dropped by the Swedish government.
Assange and his lawyers believed that if he left the Embassy, he would be arrested and handed over to the U.S. government for his activities with WikiLeaks publishing thousands of classified documents of the U.S. military.
