Street Heat on KFCF 88.1 FM
5 - 6 p.m. Friday, October 25

Street Heat is the Community Alliance radio show on KFCF 88.1 FM. Listen in today as host Pam Whalen talks to guests about the crisis at the Public Defender’s office, the proposal to bring cars back to the Fulton Mall in downtown Fresno, and an upcoming event by the local Democratic Party.

Kathy Marousek and Scott Baly, who work in the Public Defender’s office, will talk about how under funding and threats to privatize this department have led to high case loads and a struggle to provide poor and indigent clients with adequate legal representation. Read Scott’s front page article in this month’s Community Alliance newspaper, Memoirs of a Public Pretender, here: http://fresnoalliance.com/wordpress/?p=8422

Robert Turner and Kate McKight will talk about the future of the Fulton Mall. There are several proposals on the table - one would improve the mall (restoring art work, etc), one proposal would bring automobile traffic back to the mall (but maintain much of the art), and the third proposal would make more dramatic changes to the mall (in favor of the car culture). The mayor and developers favor returning cars to the mall and groups like the Sierra Club want to maintain the people friendly green space that is there now. You can read the argument for maintaining and improving a pedestrian Fulton Mall in this month’s Sierra Club newsletter, the Tehipite Topics:
http://www.tehipitesierraclub.org/sites/default/files/tehipite-topics/2013/tehipite-topics-october-2013.pdf . These articles will be in the November Community Alliance newspaper.
