Yo Soy #132 Bay Area Protests Electoral Fraud in Mexico
On Saturday, September 1, protesters in the Mission District in San Francisco came together in solidarity with the Yo Soy #132 movement, denouncing the election of Enrique Peña Nieto as the new President of Mexico.
Speakers rallied the crowd at 24th and Mission before proceeding to march through the streets to Dolores Park. Many of the signs and chants criticized Peña Nieto as well as his political party the PRI, which held power in Mexico for over 70 years. For many, the PRI is synonymous with narco-trafficking, corruption, massacres of indigenous people and assassinations of political activists, and they have once again returned to power via widespread electoral fraud. Yo Soy #132, started by university students in Mexico City, strongly rejects mass media outlets such as the television channels Televisa and TV Azteca, which serve as some of the PRI's primary mechanisms of control over the Mexican population.
Yo Soy #132 Bay Area's next event, which celebrates "La Primavera Mexicana" with food, art, and music, will take place on September 8 at 8 p.m. at the Centro Eric Quezada at 518 Valencia St. in San Francisco.
