Election 2012: U.S. Socialist Alexander wants term limits for Congress and SCOTUS

U.S. Presidential Candidate Stewart Alexander is calling for amendments to the U.S. Constitution that would impose federal term limits on members in Congress and U.S. Supreme Court justices. Stewart Alexander says, “It is time to amend the Constitution with term limits on Congress and SCOTUS to end the monopoly the Democrats, Republicans and big corporations have on the political process in Washington DC.”

Presently, the president of the United States can serve two terms in office for four years each term. Alexander is calling for a maximum of four (4) two-year terms for members of the U.S. House of Representatives; a maximum of two (2) six-year terms for members of the U.S. Senate, and a one (1) twelve-year term for U.S. Supreme Court justices.

“The U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. Supreme Court are on auto pilot,” says Alexander, “the nation is in need of leadership that can correct the course of this nation rather than staying with the direction that has been mapped by Wall Street.”

Alexander notes that this Congress is completely out of touch with the American people. Presently, Congress has an 11% approval rating. “The Congress and U.S. Supreme Court only represent corporate America and the implementation of the corporate will. I believe the American people would support term limits that would effectively end the corporate stranglehold on Washington DC.”

In a recent statement issued by the Alexander/Mendoza campaign, “Corporations have hijacked an already fundamentally flawed electoral process and are transforming it into their own hierarchical image of a society where they get to choose the candidates based on funding and exclude competitors by restricting ballot access.” Alexander says, “This was accomplished in California when big corporations backed the passing of Proposition 14 to restrict all third parties from the California ballot.”

“As president of the United States,” Alexander says “I am calling for uniform ballot access laws on the state and national level that will provide fair ballot access for third parties and independent candidates.”

The Alexander/Mendoza campaign also supports Proportional Representation. Alexander notes that creating a system of Proportional Representation would enshrine the positive changes made in the public financing of elections. “I maintain a firm commitment to the notion that we need many voices inside our electoral system in order to insure a functional democracy. The Democrats and Republicans represent the narrow interest of the 1% and their corporate financiers. We need a system that establishes democracy – term limits coupled with proportional representation is that system.
