Thursday Morning Evictions

by Mike Rhodes (editor [at] fresnoalliance.com)
The photos below document the eviction of several homeless families that lived on the side of Golden State Blvd, near downtown Fresno. This eviction took place on Thursday, November 3, 2001. This is part of a larger campaign by the City of Fresno to destroy all homeless encampments in the downtown area. This is the first day of the second week of this campaign. Photo below: This woman, who returned to the encampment to save her property, almost ran into the claw of the bulldozer when she arrived.

I had a couple of interesting conversations with city workers today. My overall impression is that nobody wants to be doing this and nobody thinks it will result in anything other than displacing the homeless. One Fresno police officer told me that he felt bad, because these people have nowhere to go. He explained that he is just following orders and that this is not a solution to the problem. A city sanitation worker told me that they were trying to comply with the mandate of the federal court order. He said they were only destroying the shelters if the owner said they could or if it was abandoned. They did seem to pack up more property and put it into storage than in previous days, but there was still obvious destruction of property taking place, as can be seen in the photos below.

This couple was also given time to pack their things and leave. The rest of their property was taken by the City of Fresno, who say they will store it for 90 days.
