Ringling Brothers Circus Opening Night Demonstration for Animals in San Jose, 8/17/11: photos

by dave id
On August 17th, opening night of the Ringling Brothers Circus in San Jose, nearly a hundred activists gathered to protest and to inform circus-goers about the cruelty involved when wild animals are forced to live in small cages and perform for audiences across the country. Ringling Brothers has an especially bad history of maltreating the animals under its care, from physically abusing them as part of their training to failing to adequately meet basic medical needs. At least one human family was seen rethinking their decision to attend the circus and left shortly after having received educational materials from demonstrators. Thousands of handbills and pamphlets were distributed, giving attendees a lot to think about before they ever possibly return to the circus. Animal activists are encouraged to help keep the heat on Ringling and its parent company, Feld Entertainment, to drop the use of animals in their live shows. Ringling Brothers will be in San Francisco then Oakland in early September. The complete schedule for leafleting upcoming Bay Area Ringling appearances is listed below if you would like to help one or more days while the circus is in in the region.

* Denotes a leafleting in between two shows. It is very important to arrive on time for these leafletings as we first leaflet people exiting the early show, who come out en masse. If we are not set-up by the time the show is done, we will miss our opportunity to educate them. After people from the early show disperse, we leaflet people going into the later show.

(Ringling Brothers will also be appearing in Sacramento on September 15th-18th. It is unknown if any protests are already scheduled for that location. See websites below for resources for organizing your own demonstrations at animal circuses.)
