2nd Annual Disability Pride Festival
At Silicon Valley Independent Living Center's 2nd Annual West Coast Disability Pride Parade & Festival on Saturday, participants came to show their disability pride and solidarity for social justice. Stage performances included speakers, belly dancers, and inspiration with chants and singing for disability pride.
Disability Rights activists and Raging Grannies reminded people at the festival to call members of Congress and tell them "DON'T CUT MEDICAID."
Cuts to this vital program will only shift costs to states and transfer the burden to people with disabilities and seniors who depend on the program for long-term services and supports.
SVILC has many other campaigns including a Stop Bullying Campaign. Youth Organizing (YO!) develops community organizing activities to build a power base among youth with disabilities so that they can effectively work for change. They engage youth to learn about the disability rights movement, disability pride, organizing, and advocacy. Through this program, youth with disabilities build community with each other, develop a sense of leadership, a positive disability identity, and organize and mobilize each other on issues that affect their lives.
