New York Legalizes Gay Marriage, How About California?
New York took the lead in the gay marriage movement, legalizing gay marriage on June 24, 2011, 42 years since Stonewall, about 1.5 generations later. A Republican majority New York Senate voted for it. California's legislature has passed it twice, vetoed by Republican Schwarzenegger. Will Democrat Gov Jerry Brown legalize gay marriage?

4 members of the Republican majority joined all except 1 Democrat to vote 33 to 29 for gay marriage. Gay marriage was opposed by the Catholic Church, evangelicial Protestants and Orthodox Jews. This is collectively known as the anti-science, backward peasant idiots. Women's suffrage was also opposed by the churches and too many churches also oppose abortion and divorce. Churches are always a bastion of reaction, maintained by parasites who do not work for a living, on the basis of superstition. We have separation of church and state in this country, and the sooner that is enforced, the better for humanity. One means of ending the religious terrorism is promoting science, including evolution, in grade school, starting in first grade. The more science education in particular, and all education in general, the less superstition also known as religion. Science means knowledge; evolution is a fact; abortion is a right and gay marriage is a civil right!

The Stonewall Riots of 1969 was when black and Puerto Rican drag queens refused to be intimidated by the police attacks on them. They were part of the era of resistance to the war against Vietnam, which was the umbrella for all causes from 1964 through 1975. The Stonewall Riots of 1969 had been preceded by the San Francisco California Hall police attack on a gay gathering for New Year's, January 1, 1965. See

The gay liberation movement goes back centuries. In the 20th Century, homosexuality was briefly legalized in the Soviet Union in the 1920s, at the beginning of the 1917 revolution. There was a gay liberation movement in Germany before Hitler took power in 1933. The rebirth of the current gay rights movement took place in the 1960s, as part of the civil rights and peace movements. See

So now, there are 6 states, Connecticut, Iowa, Massacusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and the District of Columbia where gay marriage is legal. California had gay marriage from June to November, 2008 when 18,000 gay/lesbian couples married. It was overturned by a viciously discriminatory state constitution amendment in 2008 with 53% of the vote, Prop 8. Since March 2000 (presidential primary), with Prop 22, which declared gay marriage illegal but did not put that religious idiocy into the constitution, when voters voted for it with 61% of the vote, to November 2008 (presidential general election), when voters voted for Prop 8 with 53% of the vote, gay marriage has been increasingly popular by about 1% a year. That means that by 2012, we should have gay marriage, IF NOT SOONER, in California again. If it is on the ballot in 2012, massive voter registration of young people, under age 30, must be done, and they must be pushed to the polls.
Meanwhile, Democrat Pres Clinton signed the anti-gay marriage Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. Democrat Pres Obama has yet to repeal DOMA and refuses to support gay marriage, not surprising, as Obama is utterly reactionary and has total contempt for civil rights, peace and the workingclass. He is now well-recognized as being worse than Bush, his Republican predecessor, and can only be reelected by election fraud. He only got 52% of the vote in 2008, with some 60% of adults voting; it will be back to the usual 50% of adults voting in 2012. Clearly, the movement for gay marriage comes from the streets, not the suites.
