Salmon Water Now Slams Devin Nunes' HR 1837

by Dan Bacher

I always look forward to viewing a new video by Bruce Tokars of Salmon Water Now because he so expertly exposes the attempts by the water barons to take northern California water and to destroy our Central Valley chinook salmon and Delta fish populations.

Tokar's latest video, "A Better Life? Devin Nunes And His Bad Bill," is about HR 1837, the San Joaquin Valley Water Reliability Act sponsored by Representative Devin Nunes (R-CA). Nunes is the ultimate hypocrite, since he constantly spouts off about the “evils of big government” while tirelessly promoting the agenda of those who have most profited the most by government subsidies – the corporate agribusiness welfare queens of the San Joaquin Valley.

There is no politician in the Central Valley who equals Nunes in his zeal to promote bailouts and subsidies for agribusiness corporations – and to destroy our fish populations and the public trust.

Congressman Devin Nunes definitely won't like Tokar's latest video!

"But then, Salmon Water Now doesn’t like his newest piece of legislation that he wants to make the law of the land," Tokars said. "Have you read or seen anything about HR 1837? Talk about an abomination!"

"This bill is designed to benefit a few San Joaquin valley interests at the expense of State and national water quality protection and State water rights laws," said Tokars. "It will cost millions of dollars and destroy jobs throughout Northern California, Oregon and Washington states because of its impacts on the commercial and recreational fishing industries and the surrounding communities."

Tokars said this bill "represents a blatant regional power grab to ensure a select group of irrigators jump to the head of the water bucket line at the expense of everyone else in the state."

"There seems to be no end to his dreams of delivering unlimited and unrestricted amounts of water for agriculture in the Central Valley. HR 1837 would virtually guarantee unlimited amounts of water for valley irrigators and prohibit any water from being used for the environment," said Tokars.

"And salmon? Screw ‘em," said Tokars.

Congressman Nunes has never been shy about pushing the agenda of big agriculture. He’s quick to label anyone who questions his position as being a “radical environmentalist," according to Tokars.

"Well, go get your 'Save the Earth' button and clutch it in your hand as you watch this video," Tokars quipped. "After you watch it, fire off an e-mail or phone call to your Congressional representative and let he or she know that HR 1837 needs to be killed. And while you’re at it – tell Devin Nunes that it’s time for Salmon Water, Now."

You can send a letter to stop this legislation by Nunes aimed at gutting protections for Sacramento River chinook salmon and Delta fish species and blocking the restoration of the San Joaquin River by going to the Center for Biological Diversity website action alert, "Help Save California's Salmon Runs," http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/action/alerts/.
