SHORT FILM: The Spiritual Encampment to Protect Glen Cove
Native activists and allies have been fighting to preserve Glen Cove, a Native American burial ground, from desecration for the past 12 years.
SHORT FILM ABOUT GLEN COVE ENCAMPMENT: Native activists and allies have been engaged in a spiritual encampment in the form of an around the clock prayer vigil to hold off bulldozers at Sogorea Te (the tribal name for Glen Cove). The Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD) wants to build a park and parking spaces over the shellmounds that cover the site—historic Native burial grounds that date back to 1500 B.C.E.
It has been well documented that over the years archeologists have found Native burials and artifacts all over the cove. UC Berkeley at one time took skeletal remains from Sogorea Te to place in its museum and refuses to give them back to the Native American community (because UCB makes it a practice to grave rob under the guise of 'scholarship'). GVRD has started to make threats of police action against the encampment, now in its seventh week.
It is a crucial time and their camp supplies are running low so if you can afford to donate resources, please consider doing so now. They are asking supporters to be on heightened alert over the next two weeks and prepared to respond to a call for emergency on-land support.
