New evidence of a coverup in the murder of Oscar Grant. Whistleblower needs support!

by Oakland resident
Oakland Fire Department paramedic whistle blower Sean Gillis needs community support now! Help him expose the mistreatment of Oscar Grant and the Oakland Fire Department cover up.
Sean Gillis (SG) is a paramedic's teacher for the Oakland Fire Department (OFD). SG ran the Merritt College EMT training program until he was forced to quit Merritt.

SG and the OFD Medical Director blew the whistle on the OFD for misconduct committed by Fire personnel treating Oscar Grant on the Fruitvale BART platform on January 1st 2009. Grant was only bandaged on one side of his body even though he had wounds on both his front and back.

To cover up this mistreatment, the file for Oscar Grant was destroyed and the computer archive of his Patient Care Report deleted.

The Medical Director ordered a review. Even though the Medical Director is technically the highest medical authority at OFD, his order was ignored. OFD stopped the Medical Director's paychecks, and he worked for six months without pay. When he finally left, the Medical Director turned to SG and said "You're next."

The Medical Director was right. OFD targeted SG for harassment, forced him to quit Merritt College, took away his office, work vehicle and mailbox, wrote a letter of resignation for SG to sign and tried to force him to sign it without reading it, eliminated SG's lunch break, began monthly performance reviews, suspended him, and now seeks a special review for the purpose of terminating him.

SG is defending himself before the State Personnel Board. OFD is refusing to provide SG documents he needs to defend himself.

SG made a public records request for the Grant file and staff meeting audio tapes with racist comments and inappropriate statements about Oscar Grant. The Fire Department refuses to confirm or deny the destruction of the Grant file and falsly claims the recordings don't exist while top brass review (and destroy?) the tapes.

Support from the Justice for Oscar Grant Community is urgently needed. So far, OFD has been able to suppress the story of what happened to Oscar Grant after he was shot, what OFD failed to do, and what OFD has done to people who stood up for Oscar Grant. Help us:

1. Spread the word about what happened to Oscar Grant.

2. Call the District Attorney. Demand the DA investigate the mistreatment of Oscar Grant, destruction of his file, retaliations against Michaels and Gillis, concealment of the tapes.

3. Call the city attorney handling public records requests. Demand the city admit that the Grant documents were destroyed or produce them and release the tapes.

The way that OFD does business is scandalous on a day-to-day basis, but if even half of what Gillis alleges is true, it's even worse than anyone would believe. Laziness, incompetence, favoritism, all normal: scapegoating, retaliation, bribery, racist hostility, sexism, harassment, FUBAR. Gillis is a hero for our times.

Sean Gillis
http://blip.tv/laborvideo/the-oscar-grant-murder-cover-up-whistleblower-sean-gillis-5322901

Sean Gillis, an Oakland Fire Department EMT paramedic
trainer and Vice President of IFPTE Local 21 Unit M called for an
investigation of the treatment of Oscar Grant who was murdered
at the Fruitville BART station. As a result he has been targeted for
firing and harassment. Gillis talks about the conditions in the
department and the efforts to silence him after he called for an
investigation. He also discusses the atmosphere of racism and the
privatization scheme being pushed by the management of the
department to outsource from Merritt Community College the
training of paramedics from the community to a private company
AMR. Also interviewed was labor and civil rights attorney Phil
Horne who is representing Sean Gillis. This interview was conducted
on June 12, 2011.
