How you can help KPFA
There is currently an ongoing crisis at KPFA. The KPFA union on their website, KPFAworker.org, portrays the crisis as one of union busting political purges by top heavy bureaucratic Pacifica, however, the real problem is the KPFA finances over the past ten years.
• [KPFAworker says] PUT RADIO FIRST. Pacifica’s budgets should cut bureaucratic overhead, not programs KPFA’s listeners count on.
[A Response] Pacifica Central Services pays for Democracy Now! and other national programming. KPFA pays Pacifica Central Services a fixed percentage of the KPFA Listener Support. Two years ago Pacifica laid off most of its staff when the Listener Support across the network started to decline. (See attached Graph).
• [KPFAworker says] LOCAL CONTROL. Stop sidelining KPFA’s elected Local Station Board and local management in the budget drafting process.
[A Response] KPFA is not a stand-alone nonprofit and its Local Station Board is a standing committee of the Pacifica Foundation. The Pacifica Foundation is the nonprofit entity which holds the licenses of all five stations including KPFA and is responsible for all the stations to be in compliance with nonprofit law which requires the nonprofit organization to be in control of its assets. The "Sustainable Budget" that was passed by the KPFA Local Station Board in October 2010 was like a Band-Aid for a bullet wound. The Pacifica National Board did not approve KPFA's "Sustainable Budget" because the only sustainable budget is one where the expenses are in line with real income. (See attached Graph).
• [KPFAworker says] NO POLITICAL PURGES. Three Pacifica board members drew up a name-by-name list of workers to fire that targeted those who didn’t endorse their election slate – they have no business interfering in KPFA’s union contract.
[A Response] A story has been circulated repeatedly that a 'mis-directed email' disclosed a 'hit list' drawn up by three of the KPFA Pacifica National Board members to purge their political opponents.
There was NO 'mis-directed email' and there was NO 'hit list'.
It is understandable but unfortunate that so many people believe this fabricated story, but it is more troubling that some are willing to put the station at further financial risk by spreading disinformation to inflame and divide the KPFA community.
Layoffs are always difficult. The only fair and equitable way to carry out the layoffs was to follow the union contract and base it on seniority within skill sets. In the end two workers were laid off.
• [KPFAworker says] PRESERVE LOCAL PROGRAMMING. Stop all attempts to replace community-driven programs with syndicated content.
[A Response] The current syndicated program is only an interim measure. The Pacifica Executive Director has said that the Morning Show will be returned as a locally produced show.
How You Can Help
You can help KPFA get through these hard times by doubling your contribution this year, and asking everyone you know to do the same.
You can help by not getting caught up in the disinformation campaign that claims that the layoffs are union busting political purges.
Pacifica's Executive Director Arlene Englehardt is responsible for the whole Network and this includes wresting KPFA from its previous uncontrolled spending and bad management.
We should thank the Executive Director Arlene Engelhardt and the Chief Financial Officer Lavarn Williams for tirelessly working to put KPFA and Pacifica back on a solid financial footing, and being so steadfast in face of malicious abuses that have been hurled at them.
We need to bridge the divide and all work together to not only strengthen the station so that it can continue as a healthy, vibrant fertile ground for information, inquiry, and engagement but also empower those who are in a position to provide the over 100 affiliated community stations across the country with the progressive programming that we so depend upon to be the informed citizens that are the hope of a decent society -- programs such as Democracy Now!, Free Speech Radio News, Letters To Washington, Flashpoints, Uprising, and many others that are produced at the various Pacifica stations.

I have been a KPFA member for many years contributing more than the basic amount. But every year I hear about this Pacifica vs KPFA worker conflict, and when I listen to both sides arguments I can never determine who's right and who's wrong. My requests to see a transparent and complete budget from both sides have been ignored and I can find no budgets on either the KPFA or Pacifica sites. (If anyone knows where to find one, please advise.) The only info the public gets is edited info like the graphs above or misc line item reports claiming a corner on the truth.
The reports of coup d'etats by both sides have become tiresome.
It is clear that KPFA should not be hiring staff that is not budgeted for. It is clear that KPFA needs to be able to increase fund raising if it wants to expand offerings and paid staff. And it is clear that $400,000, if true, or whatever amount is spent on Pacifica meetings (equal to 10% of KPFAs budget?) is absurd. It is also absurd, if true, that the previous KPFA director kept a 6 figure check in a drawer for months without depositing it and because of this the check was cancelled by the donor. Did Brian E-T actuall hire a shock & awe Republican lawyer and claim reverse descrimination?
This is all so high school! Is there no one here who can raise this dialog to the level of the "best available information assiduously sought after" so we can get to the truth?
As a member, I am tired of self-serving rumors on both sides and I want to see a transparent budget enclosed inside of a yearly published Annual Report, posted on both KPFA and Pacifica sites, every year, for the entire the Pacifica system and stations, for all members to read. Is this too much to ask?

"The financial report stated that KPFA's current cash-in-bank totals $79,000 as of 12-4 with $78,000 in account payables, and a monthly payroll obligation of over $140,000. $150,000 is also owed to the parent foundation and has been for more than 6 months. "
This is not a viable operation. Please read the rest of that article as it exposes the horror of the Thug Hallinan Gang, clearly determined to destroy KPFA, and with it Pacifica, if the bleeding is not stopped. The Pacifica National Board should have layed off people 2 years ago and they will have to lay off more, starting with the person with the least seniority, Mitch Jeseritch, who joined with Brian Edwards-Tiekert in going to a Republican Party lawyer to file one of many lawsuits against Pacifica.
For most of us, postings to this website is the only way we have any idea as to what is going on. It would certainly help to see the Minutes. The sooner the December 2010 minutes are posted to http://lsb.kpfa.org/, the better.
And how is KPFA going to meet payroll for December?

I listen to KPFA for the local programming and I will not contribute to the station until the Morning Show is restored. Englehart will quickly learn that the majority of long term contributors to the station are withholding their funds because of her fascist tactics. You need to question what her ultimate goal is-I believe she and her board what to liquidate the station and sell the license off to a commercial interest. To quote a very bad movie-follow the money!
That's where the money is going.
Your liquidators are Kill KPFA (Save KPFA - Concerned Listeners).
Five minutes back in the board majority - 11 lawsuits.

Sorry, 'Peace Witch', but there's nothing 'fascist' about laying off the people with lowest seniority.
And if you want to figure out who are the people trying to bankrupt Pacifica, look at the people -- Edwards-Tiekert, Jeserich, and Sawyer -- who have 'hired' (i.e., teamed up with) a law firm headed by a right-wing politician, Harmeet K. Dhillon, to sue Pacifica. Ms. Dhillon was co-chair of Lawyers for Bush/Cheney’04. Her "Top Priorities if Elected" when she ran against Tom Ammiano for State Assembly in 2008 were:
- We must balance California's budget without raising taxes
- Municipalities such as San Francisco should not be allowed to impose their own health-care taxes and other city-specific regulations on businesses.
- All California jurisdictions -- including San Francisco -- should cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Do the self-styled "progressives" of "SaveKPFA" still want to be associated with Brian Edwards-Tiekert and his gang?

This was not a case of an illegal takeover.
This was a case of an adult having to step in and clean up the mess the kids left behind.

Peace Witch is onto something here:
We can't let Engelhardt do that...
