Los Angeles Calls for Justice for Oscar Grant – Convict Mehserle for Murder
The Los Angeles Coalition for Oscar Grant will host a press
conference (10:00-10:30 AM) and rally (7:00-10:00) for the second hearing for
the trial of former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle, who brutally killed Oscar Grant one year ago in Oakland.
Mehserle is
the first law enforcement officer in California to ever be tried for murder in
the “line of duty.” People in Los Angeles have a direct
interest in winning justice for Oscar Grant and a murder conviction for his
killer.
The featured speakers and groups for this event include:
* Los Angeles Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant.
* Oakland General Assembly for Justice for Oscar Grant.
* Cephus Johnson, Oscar Grant's uncle.
* Jack Bryson, whose two sons were with Oscar
Grant when he died.
* Keisha Brunston, the aunt of Deondre Brunston (killed by
LA Sheriffs).
* Senora Elida Portillo, the mother of Christian Portillo
(killed by LA/Lennox Sheriffs).
* Kalonna, the fiancée of Marcus Smith (killed by Inglewood
PD).
* Senora Porfiria Rivera, mother of Carlos Rivera (killed by
LAPD).
* Atun Re Baker, uncle of Dontaze Storey, Jr. (killed by
LAPD).
Los Angeles Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant
– Points of Unity:
* We demand justice for
the murder of Oscar Grant. We believe that Officer Johannes Mehserle needs to
be found guilty of murder—not a lesser charge—and jailed.
* Oscar Grant is one
more stolen life in a nation where police brutality runs rampant. The
criminal justice system systematically oppresses people of color and poor
people.
September 19th, 2010—Second Hearing Context:
* The Los Angeles Coalition demands that the bail of the murderer Mehserle should not be reduced.
* In addition, Judge Robert Perry should be removed from the
case in light of his record in presiding over the infamous Los Angeles “Rampart
Scandal,” in which he allowed all of the corrupt, murdering, and violent police
to gain clemency, with the exception of one officer. We believe that Judge
Perry is not an appropriate choice for Judge and will not provide justice for
Oscar Grant.
Background:
Oscar
Grant’s young life was ripped away from his daughter and family when he was
shot in the back by Oakland BART Officer Johannes Mehserle on January 1,
2009. Oscar, 22 years old, was shot and killed while he was being held
face-down on a train platform with his hands behind his back. Several
videos taken by witnesses were posted on the internet and widely viewed, and Oakland burst into firestorms of protest. Mehserle’s trial was moved to Los Angeles to escape the outrage in Oakland, and it was assigned to Judge Robert Perry,
who covered up the Rampart/CRASH scandal in Los Angeles. These are moves
to let Mehserle walk free.
Oscar Grant is a symbol
of thousands nationwide who have been murdered by the police. Over a
hundred people have been shot and killed by police and other members of
law enforcement in Los Angeles County area alone since 2007. In contrast, Mehserle is the first law enforcement officer in the
history of the state of California to be tried for murder for a “line-of-duty”
shooting. We cannot allow this killer cop to go free. Mehserle must
be convicted for the cold-blooded murder of Oscar Grant, and Los Angeles and Oakland together must call for justice.
