2/3 Meeting-Defend Labor Rights At KPFA/Stop Union Busting/Defend Flashpoints Staff
The KPFA management has flagrantly violated the CWA 9415 union contract at KPFA in making retaliatory cutbacks without regard to the union contract. The management has attacked the KPFA activist show Flashpoints in their effort to eliminate activist programming. This forum will address these issues and how to turn KPFA and Pacifica into a portal for the activist community and for critical programming on our vital issues.
2/3 Solidarity Meeting

Activist Programming Programming Threatened!
February 3, 2010 Wed 7:00 PM

Donation Requested
KPFA management has flagrantly violated the CWA 9415 union contract at radio station KPFA by cutting the hours of Flashpoints staff without regard to the union contract. Nora Barrows-Friedman had her hours cut 50% despite the fact that she has more seniority than many other employees. In fact, Assistant Manager Amelia Gonzalez admitted that they had ignored the contract in layoffs and were consulting the union after the fact. Is this how management operates at KPFA?
Panelists will also discuss how KPFA and Pacifica can again become an activist news and information portal for the community in these critical times.
Initial Speakers:
Jack Heyman, ILWU Local 10
Riva Enteen, Past Chair KPFA Local Station Board
Ann Garrison, Writer & Housing Activist
Dennis Bernstein, Producer KPFA Flashpoints

Stop Union Busting At KPFA: Rescind the Illegal Cuts-Labor Petition To Defend Flashpoints: Petition
Stop Union Busting At KPFA
Rescind the Illegal Cuts
KPFA manager Lemlem Rijio has instituted layoffs and cuts at the KPFA station that seriously endanger
activist shows including "Flashpoints". The daily news show had it's engineer eliminated and the co-producer
Nora Barrow-Friedman had her hours reduced 50% or 20 hours. This has reduced her income as a mother of
a nine year old to $1200 a month. The management without consultation has also eliminated the funding for journalist
Robert Knight whose segment is an important part of the Flashpoints show. Many other staff have been added to since
Robert Knight become a part of the Flashpoints staff yet they their hours have not been eliminated.
The management lay-offs according to KPFA assistant manager Amelia Gonzalez and the union chapter violate the CWA 9415
contract which requires that layoffs be by senority. This flagrant violation of the union contract by the KPFA management
violates the goals of Pacifica and also were instituted to retaliate against a show that management has wanted to eliminate.
We call on the station management to restore these positions and if any further cuts and lay-offs take place we call on the
station management to make these cuts in accordance with the union contract.
The long term effort to move to eliminate the Flashpoints show while funding has been used to establish other paid shows on
the station is an overt example of the effort by management to eliminate this show.
This is also not the first instance of anti-labor stance. The refusal of the station management to recognize the Unpaid Staff
Organization UPSO despite action by the Local Station Board and the National Pacifica Board to recognize the UPSO at KPFA is
part and parcel of their behavior.
This station is and should continue to be vital broadcast vehicle for labor and union struggle in the bay area, in the US and
internationally. These anti-union actions threaten to put the station is grave danger. We believe that stations and the many
critical programs must be defended and the longer that the station management continues on this course puts the station's
finances and support in danger.
We also call on all union locals, labor councils and other labor bodies to join in this effort to stop these anti-labor attacks.

I support this work to re-direct KPFA to be the tool that carries forward our work for material justice for us all. The present and decade-old body of people in control - by stealing it, against the original votes by our representatives from our Pacifica community - these self-serving would-be owners of a U.S. medium subscribe to politics that serve their own advancement. They're just committedly ignorant, hostile to knowing what's actually happening here on Earth with us all, and what's necessary to work to change that.
To that end they've rearranged the station to be a mild accompaniment to NICE little non-efforts to address the actual concerns we have to have in order to do the work required of us to stop the misery and human-made destruction.
