In a special Asian-fused celebration for the Reverend Cecil Williams 80th birthday earlier this year, the renowned Leung’s White Crane Lion and Dragon Dance School will perform a lively traditional Lion Dance featuring fighting lions.

“In the Chinese culture, the 80th birthday is ‘Da Shou’ – meaning grand longevity,” said Chau Lam, Asian Chefs Association Executive Director. “Cecil’s grand 45-year commitment to our poorest neighbors – the longevity of his commitment – has inspired all of us to give the best of ourselves to help the people most in need. We are honored and privileged to provide this service today.”

This is the sixth year the Asian Chefs Association, in partnership with the California Culinary Academy, prepares and serves a delicious Asian lunch and dinner for Glide’s clients. This year’s menu features Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple and Green Pepper, Chinese Egg Rolls, Stirred Fried Chicken with Vegetables, Steamed Rice, Asian Cold Slaw with Sesame and Vinaigrette and dessert with a variety of cookies. The food will be prepared at the California Culinary Academy (350 Rhode Island at 16th Street) the previous day, and delivered to Glide on Monday, December 14 where the chefs will cook and serve the meals.

“We are so grateful for the generosity and creativity of the Asian Chefs Foundation,” said Reverend Cecil Williams. “Their grand, spirited gesture underscores their commitment to our community.”

Under the direction of chef Khai Duong (Ana Mandara in San Francisco) and chef Lawrence Chu (Chef Chu’s in Los Altos), participants this year include Straits & Sino Restaurant, Sushi Ran, Nikko Hotel, Three Seasons, Hilton San Francisco, California Culinary Academy, Ana Mandara, Chef Chu’s, Roy’s, Poleng Lounge, South Sea Seafood Village, Three Seasons and many other well known Asian restaurants. Corporate sponsors include Kikkoman International, VE Wong, China Airlines, Dong Vinh Restaurant Supplies, Donsuemor Madeleines, Hilton Hotel, Fresh Green Produce, California Culinary Academy (partner sponsor) and Parnassus Invest.

The White Crane Lion Dance will be performed from the sidewalk to the entrance and lobby of Glide by students from Leung’s White Crane Lion and Dragon Dance School in San Francisco. Two colorful, lively lions will spar in the traditional White Crane dance style, influenced by centuries of martial arts, accompanied by drumming and music.
