Billionaire Meg Whitman to Challenge Same-Sex Marriage Rights

by Stewart A. Alexander
Meg Whitman may be the most dangerous opponent the same-sex marriage supporters may face in 2010; she is a billionaire, she already has the strong support of her Republican base and she has the financial backing to campaign for governor. The political far right has moved from Hollywood to the corporate board room to recruit candidates for public office and to win political power in California.

While same-sex marriage supporters are circulating petitions for another shot to have same-sex marriage rights back on the 2010 ballot, the supporters of Proposition 8 gained a new ally to help defeat any measure that will give same-sex couples the right to marry; this new ally is the former President and CEO of eBay, Meg Whitman, announcing last week that she will seek to become Governor of California.

Meg Whitman may be the most dangerous opponent the same-sex marriage supporters may face in 2010; she is a billionaire, she already has the strong support of her Republican base and she has the financial backing to campaign for governor. Whitman’s campaign has already been endorsed by John McCain and Mitt Romney.

The political far right has moved from Hollywood to the corporate board room to recruit candidates for public office and to win political power in California. In 2003, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger used his star power to bamboozle California voters. Now, Meg Whitman and her Republican friends are using her corporate ties to gain political power in California.

Meg Whitman is far to the political right. In 2008 she joined John McCain’s presidential campaign as the national co-chair, she has promised to roll back the environmental laws of Governor Schwarzenegger, and Whitman has already made clear her opposition to gay marriage rights.

Whitman may have the finance to run as a candidate for California governor; however, she has limited public leadership skills that will be necessary to address the many complex issues that must be dealt with in state government, and Californians need a governor that is able to address the needs of all groups and political concerns.

Meg Whitman has never held public office and has never been a candidate for public office; and not until 2002, Whitman chose not to engage in the voting process. Whitman admits that she should have; however, she says it is something she failed to do.

Now, after seven years of listening to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, and campaigning for John McCain, Meg Whitman believes she is ready to address gay and lesbian rights, and the rights of same-sex couples to marry. After seven years of listening to Lou Dobbs and Bill O’Reilly, Whitman believes she is prepared to address immigration issues. With much experience on how Wall Street works, Whitman believes she is prepared to address the needs of two million unemployed Californians and more than three out of every four working Californians that are presently under-employed. After rubbing elbows with her rich Republicans friends for the past decade, Whitman believes she is now ready to deal with a statewide education system that is failing our kids and is heavily taxing college students on tuitions. Whitman believes she is ready to deal with an over crowded prison system that has more than 625 inmates on death row and is costing the State of California billions of dollars to appeal their convictions; and after seven years of following Republican politics, Whitman believes she is ready to lead the State of California.

In 2003 and 2006, Californians went to the polls attempting to elect a governor that would protect the public’s interests over the interest of the wealthy few. Meg Whitman may be well connected in her rich Republican circles; however, she is certainly disconnected to more than 37 million Californians that cannot afford another four years of a two party system that is out of touch with California voters and the working class.

The Peace and Freedom Party, a California ballot qualified party, is extending a welcome to Meg Whitman to debate the issues with the PFP gubernatorial candidates that have already filed their Candidate Intention Statements with the California Secretary of State Office.

The Peace and Freedom Party supports having a measure on the California 2010 ballot that will support same-sex marriage. The PFP supports gay rights and the party is calling for the end of all anti-gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender restrictions, and the legalization of same-sex marriage.
