DC March for Universal Health Care Just Announced for September 13th; Support Single Payer

by HR 676 on the House Floor
The March is on
Will we do something here.
These opportunities are seldom
Former Labor Secretary Reich's call for a march a week ago is now real. The march is on; 9/13/09 in DC. High stakes gambit. Turnout is essential. Maybe we can do something here in solidarity on the West Coast..

Even though it is sponsored by Public Option; notice it includes medicare for all. Hard to imagine them excluding people with Single Payer Now signs.

AMERICANS UNITED FOR HEALTH CARE & INSURANCE REFORM RALLY & March in Washington, D.C. Sept. 13, 2009

Sioux City, IA August 31, 2009: A rally/march will be held in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 13, 2009 between 12N – 5pm in support of the administrations health care and health insurance reform goals. It is the goal of Americans United for Health Care and Insurance Reform to let congress know that all Americans need health care and insurance. Over 47 million Americans are uninsured and millions more are underinsured or at risk of losing their health insurance

The rally/march will begin at the Lincoln Memorial and march to the steps of the Capitol Building via the National Mall. This rally/march will be peaceful.

Robert Reich has given his support to this rally and march, “….I just want Congress to know how many Americans want universal health care and will settle for no less than complete coverage and no less than a public insurance option, to keep private insurers honest. So I’m happy to lend my support to whatever you are doing.”

Americans have enjoyed the freedom of movement, speech and employment. It is time that American citizens have the freedom that comes from knowing they have affordable health care for themselves and their families. Health care is not just for the privileged but it is a fundamental right.

Other groups marching on September 13, 2009 for health care reform are Congressman Fattah’s “March for Healthcare”, “Medicare for All”, and “March on Washington for Health Care.”

We invite all those who wish to participate visit our web blog at http://www.americansunitedhcr.wordpress.com and register to rally.

From: Kevin Zeese Subject: [new-party] Make sure the historic first ever House floor vote on single payer succeeds

Below is an email we have sent to ProsperityAgenda.US members urging them to push Rep. Weiner to introduce HR 676 and to let us know he will be doing so in order to allow us to generate support for the amendment on the House Floor. You can also see a link to a coalition letter sent to Rep. Weiner making the same points.

Two things to update on this. First, a good sign is that Rep. Weiner is requesting a CBO scoring of HR 676. We're a little worried about the CBO scoring since CBO looks at government expenditures rather than health care expenditures. HR 676 will increase government spending but will reduce health care spending. On the other hand CBO has done previous scorings in the 90s on single payer that were very positive.

Second, we hear there is a lot of pressure to get supporters of HR 676 to vote against it if it comes to the Floor for a vote. It is being characterized as voting against the president. This sounds like Rahm Emanuel's handiwork. They could have taken the opposite approach and told people they can vote for HR 676 and that frees them to also vote for the Dem bill if HR 676 does not pass. But, I image the insurance industry and their representatives in the White House and Congress sees this as an opportunity to kill single payer from ever being discussed again by getting a very low vote total.

Right now, the job is to push Weiner. We took a somewhat positive approach because we think that is the best way to push him but also warned him that if he does not introduce HR 676 that he will not have our support and will be standing alone.

Today, ProsperityAgenda.US joined a coalition of single payer advocates to urge Rep. Weiner to introduce HR 676, the most popular single payer health care bill, on the House floor for a historic first ever vote on a single payer national health care plan.

You can read the letter by clicking here.

As you may recall, in the final hours before the congressional recess, Rep. Weiner was prepared to introduce a single payer amendment in a House committee. The leadership feared the amendment would pass with Republicans joining with single payer advocates on the committee. As a result they struck a deal - Rep. Weiner would get a House floor vote on the amendment if he withdrew the amendment. He agreed.

Now that the amendment is going to the floor of the House, Rep. Weiner has not committed to using HR 676/Medicare for All as the language of the amendment. He has not publicly stated what language he will be using.

We need your leadership in making sure that he stays strong on the best legislation representing the single-payer movement, HR 676, with 86 cosponsors in the House and a national movement of millions supporting it.

Please join us in sending a letter to Rep. Weiner urging him to introduce HR 676 on the House Floor. Click here to send a letter to Rep. Weiner. In addition, especially if you live in New York, please call his office at 202.225.6616.

The letter urges Rep. Weiner to announce that he will be introducing HR 676 so that the single payer movement can get behind his amendment and urge Members of Congress to vote for it. We will be unable to support him if he takes a different approach.

Click here to send the letter.

Single payer has come a long way from where we started - from off the table to a vote on the House floor. The Democrat's bill is in trouble. Now is the time to show strong support for a real solution to America's health care crisis - a national health plan funded by single payer. Please contact Rep. Weiner today.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Kevin Zeese
