'Forty injured' in US prison riot

by via BBC
Some 40 prisoners have been taken to hospital following a riot and a fire at a jail in the US state of California, according to US media reports.
The violence reportedly broke out on Saturday at the California Institute for Men in the town of Chino, east of Los Angeles.

A prison spokesman told KTLA-TV that the situation had been brought under control on Sunday morning.

He said some of the prisoners' injuries were considered life-threatening.

No prison staff had been hurt, the spokesman said.

The Los Angeles Times newspaper reported that the riot had begun at about 2020 local time (0320 GMT) in one of the prison's seven housing units.

Firefighters attended the scene after at least one of the units caught fire.

I do not understand why the prison system is run the way it is.Why do they allow prisoners to mingle with each other? It obviously causes tension and leads to violence. These people need (correction) and do not get it.Instead, for some it is just a home away from home where the drug use and violence just continues as usual. Why are violent and non-violent prisoners housed together? If everyone was kept in their cells there would not be any rape, robbery, drug use or beating going on.The prisoners involved in the riot and destruction of their housing should have to finish serving their time in the mess they created.Maybe if prison was hard labor and basic necessities people would think twice about doing a crime.Maybe public execution or stoning could be brought back as a deterrant to crime. On the other hand rehab and education should be a requirement not an option when in prison. This is how I and many other people I talked to feel, I hope change can happen.
