Hilton San José: Scene of Community-Supported Employee Demo

by R. Robertson
Employees demonstrating directly in front of the Hilton San José on May 20 included janitorial staff, restaurant workers, and housekeepers.

Hotel guests and management heard employees' message loud and clear...with plenty of support for the cause from concerned community members.

The Hilton San José is connected to the McEnery Convention Center which draws visitors from around the globe year-round. Employees at this first-class hotel service "Executive-Level" rooms with upgraded amenities, including the highly touted "Suite Dreams" mattress and box springs, "Super Topper" mattress pad, extra bulky comforters, pillows, decorative bed throws and bolster pillows. All that adds up to a heavy load for housekeepers who clean and maintain the rooms.

The City Bar & Grill in the hotel's lobby serves primarily hotel guests and conventioneers who are demanding of top-level service in keeping with the high standards of business travelers.

Employees maintaining the quality that is expected by Hilton management say that one of their key concerns is health care for themselves and their families. They want desperately to maintain their health care at the current affordability and benefit level.

Everyone was bilingual enough for this song:

No-o, no-o, no nos moveran
No-o, no-o, no nos moveran
Just like a tree that's standing by the water
no nos moveran

Unidos en la lucha
No nos moveran
Unidos en la lucha
No nos moveran
Just like a tree that's standing by the water
We shall not be moved

We're fighting for our children
We shall not be moved
We're fighting for our children
we shall not be moved
Just like a tree that's standing by the water
we shall not be moved

Fuertes fuertes
Fuertes somos ya
Fuertes fuertas

Just like a tree that's standing by the water
Fuertes somos ya
