Representatives Miller and McNerney will be keynote speakers at Delta Symposium

by Dan Bacher
Restore the Delta has just announced the keynote speakers for the February 28, 2009 Symposium, "A Bold Direction: The People's Vision for the Delta." Launching the morning session will be Keynote Speaker Congressman George Miller (D-Martinez), the author of the Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) and numerous other environmental bills.

The event is being held when Central Valley chinook salmon and California Delta pelagic (open water) fish populations are in their greatest crisis ever, due to massive water exports out of the estuary and declining water quality. Meanwhile, a dark alliance of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Senator Dianne Feinstein and the Nature Conservancy are campaigning for a peripheral canal that will make the precarious state of Central Valley and Delta fish populations even worse.

"A Bold Direction: The People's Vision for the Delta"

Restore the Delta is pleased to announce the keynote speakers for the February 28, 2009 Symposium, "A Bold Direction: The People's Vision for the Delta." Launching the morning session will be Keynote Speaker Congressman George Miller (D-Martinez).

Congressman Miller is a leading advocate in Congress on education, labor, the economy, and the environment. He has represented the 7th District of California in the East Bay of San Francisco since 1975. Among his committee assignments, Congressman Miller serves on the House Natural Resources Committee, one of Congress' primary committees overseeing the environment, energy and public lands, where he served as chairman from 1991 to 1994, and senior Democrat until 2000.

Congressman Miller will address symposium attendees at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event.

Starting off the afternoon session will be Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton). Congressman McNerney. Congressman McNerney serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee as a member of both the Highways and Transit and Water Resources and Environment subcommittees. Congressman McNerney is also privileged to serve on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and the House Committee on Science and Technology.

Congressman McNerney will speak during lunch on the day of the event.

Both Congressman Miller and Congressman McNerney have recently articulated support of Delta restoration and the protection of Delta communities. We could not ask for better speakers to help us set the tone for the work that we, the Delta community, will need to accomplish in the weeks and months to come.

Again, the event will be held on February 28, 2009 at Wine and Roses in Lodi. Wine and Roses is located at the intersection of Woodhave and Turner Roads in Lodi. Click here for directions, http://www.winerose.com/Main/directions.html.
