What: Tribal members will testify and urge the Senate Governmental Organizations Committee to vote in support of Assembly Joint Resolution 39, authored by Assemblyman Huffman and sponsored by the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, which would urge the federal government to restore recognition to the Tribe.

When: Tuesday, June 24th

Where: Capitol Building, Room 3191

Assembly Joint Resolution 39 (AJR 39) recognizes the injustices the Winnemem Wintu Tribes face on a daily basis. The resolution, co-sponsored by the Tribe and other advocacy groups, urges the Federal government to restore recognition status to the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, which disappeared in the 1980's with no explanation by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

However, the state of California and federal agencies have engaged in numerous negotiations, including Memorandums of Understanding and permits, with the Tribe, who is listed by the Native American Heritage Commission. AJR 39 successfully passed out of the Assembly and will now be put to a vote in the Senate Governmental Organizations Committee, and if passing, will go to the Senate for a floor vote.
