Janitors Picket ABM
Today the janitors of SEIU Local #87 walked a picket line in downtown San Francisco. Workloads have increased due to extra demands like recycling. The workers demand fair compensation and safety.
"ABM UNFAIR! SEIU Stronger Together LOCAL 87
We, the janitors of Local 87 are picketing in front of 555/575 Market St. in protest of the unsafe workload increase that has recently been implemented at our building by American Building Maintenance (ABM), the janitorial company that cleans this building. With San Francisco moving towards being a "green" city more and more buildings are implementing recycling programs. With these programs building owners and managers are, literally, SAVING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS EVERY MONTH, not to mention all of the tax breaks received for cutting down on the amount of garbage that the building produces. Every time that a building implements the recycling program the WORK FOR THE JANITORS DOUBLES. No one has taken this into consideration and everyday janitors continue being injured on the job due to these unsafe workload increases. The janitors care about the environment and hope to leave a clean planet behind for their children and grandchildren, but not at our expense. With the thousands of dollars that the building owners are saving every month they can afford to hire janitors needed to get the job done AND keep the janitors safe"(For more information please contact SEIU Local 87 @ 240 Golden Gate Avenue San Francisco 415 885 0087).
