by Scott Kennedy
Bill Monning, candidate for the 27th State Assembly District, won a stunning endorsement victory of campaign rivals on Saturday March 22 and the Democratic Women's Club of Santa Cruz.

101 votes were cast at the Democratic Women's Club of Santa Cruz for endorsement in the 27th Assembly District race on Saturday morning March 22. The seat was made vacant by incumbent John Laird leaving office due to term limits. 52 votes were needed for any candidate to receive the DWC's endorsement. Monning received 59 votes, and the DWC/SC endorsement by a seven point margin. Former Santa Cruz Mayor and City Counilmember Emily Reilly lost handily on her own turf, garnering 33 votes. Barbara Sprenger came in a distant third with 9 votes.

Monning's endorsement by the DWC follows his equally lopsided support by the endorsement caucus of the 27th Assembly District Democratic Caucus on March 13th. At the pre-endorsement caucus, that determines whether to forward an endorsement to the State Democratic Party, Monning also won big. He received 42 votes, outpacing both Sprenger and Reilly, each of whom received 12 votes.

Monning is a well known progressive based in Monterey. Santa Cruz is the northernmost part of the 27th Assembly District. He is a lawyer, Professor of Law at Monterey College of Law, instructor at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and founder and president of the non-profit group GLobal Majority in Monterey.

Hands!

A basketball in my hands is worth about $19.
A basketball in Michael Jordan's hands is worth about $33 million.
It depends whose hands it's in.

A baseball in my hands is worth about $6.
A baseball in Roger Clemens' hands is worth $475 million.
It depends on whose hands it's in.

A tennis racket is useless in my hands.
A tennis racket in Andre Agassi's hands is worth millions.
It depends whose hands it's in.

A rod in my hands will keep away an angry dog.
A rod in Moses' hands will part the mighty sea.
It depends whose hands it's in.

A slingshot in my hands is a kid's toy.
A slingshot in David's hand is a mighty weapon.
It depends whose hands it's in.

Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in my hands is a couple of fish
sandwiches.
Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in Jesus' hands will feed thousands.
It depends whose hands it's in.

Nails in my hands might produce a birdhouse.
Nails in Jesus Christ's hands will
Produce salvation for the entire world.
It depends whose hands it's in.

As you see now, it depends whose hands it's in.
So put your concerns, your worries, your fears, your hopes, your
dreams, your families and your relationships in God's hands
because...
It depends whose hands it's in.
