BART cops evict peace nudes from UN Plaza
.... but SF city cops ignore nudes4peace ...
.............................................
.............................................
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District police evicted three nudes4peace, and clothed allies,
from the west end of United Nations
Plaza on Wednesday afternoon, 19 March 2008.
The demonstators
were around half a block from the BART station entrance.
SUN asserts that the BART cops exceeded their authority.
There were no arrests, and no tickets. Instead, the peaceniks merely walked west across Hyde Street, over to Fulton Street (which runs east/west, connecting U.N. Plaza to Larkin Street and Civic Center Plaza).
Two of the nudes had peace symbols painted on their bare skin. The group continued demonstrating in and around Fulton Street, mainly at a monument which stands in the middle of the street, for an hour or so. SF city cops ignored them.
Most of this group avoided Civic Center Plaza, since ANSWER didn't want nudes to attend their rally.
Perhaps ANSWER wanted to avoid offending certain nudophobic religious sects
(which might also be homophobic)?
[ For debates on ANSWER's no-nudes policy, starting March 18, please see LGBTI/queer page of http://www.indybay.org ]
Upcoming 2008 possibilities for SF nude peace demos may include
Anarchist Book Fair (March 22-23?), Fisherman's Wharf (?), Saint Stupid's Day (April first), Olympic torch relay (April 9?), Peoples Park birthday (April 27), No Pants Day (May 2), How Weird Street Fair (?),
Bay 2 Breakers (May 18), Haight Street Fair (?), Pink Saturday, Pride Celebration, Dore Alley Fair,
Love Fest, Folsom Street Fair, and more.
