Goodbye dollar! Gold is going through the roof!
Grand plans and reality.
In the business section of the paper today buried in an article
about lower interest rates, is the question "Can you cure an excess
of indiscriminate borrowing by giving incentives to borrow more."
Isn't our policy like giving money to a ruined heroin addict to go
out and buy more drugs. Time for an intervention (like my favorite
TV show on A&E)? But instead of rehab we get more drugs to deepen
the addiction.
Forget about Grand Plans for now.

1/29: RETHINKING PLASTICS, RETHINKING OUR LIVES (fairfax)
On TUESDAY, JANUARY 29, from 7-9 PM at 85 Bolinas Road, Suite 17 (above Yoga Loka) in Fairfax, SUSTAINABLE FAIRFAX will host an informational talk and presentation by ANDY PERI and STUART MOODY of GREEN SANGHA on the devasting effects that plastic consumption is having on out oceans, landfills, and our bodies.
The talk will be followed by a discussion and demonstration of alternative choices we can make rather than consuming so many plastic goods or plastic packaging. A representative from GOOD EARTH will be available to offer non-plastic alternative products for sale.
Parents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the effects plastic is having on our children's health and to learn how to package lunches for school without creating more plastic waste.
Everyone is welcome. Donations of $5-$10 are suggested. For more information go to http://www.sustainable fairfax.org or contact Sustainable Fairfax's Executive Director, Pam Hartwell-Herrero (pam @sustainable fairfax.org) at 415-269-0621.

Wed Jan 30 7pm Tuolumne River Presentation (Palo Alto)
Please join Peter Drekmeier, Tuolumne River Trust's Bay Area Program Director, for a presentation in Palo Alto on the Tuolumne River and our efforts to protect it:
Tuolumne to the Tap January 30 (Wednesday), 7pm
Located at Acterra, 3921 E. Bayshore Rd., Palo Alto
Directions: http://www.acterra.org/about/locations.html
About the Tuolumne
From its headwaters high in the mountains of Yosemite National Park, the Tuolumne River cascades 162 miles west before joining the San Joaquin River and flowing north into the San Francisco Bay-Delta. Designated a “Wild and Scenic River” in 1984, the Tuolumne offers unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities, hosting thousands of hikers, whitewater boaters, anglers and family campers each year.
The Tuolumne River is now under threat. Despite dramatic declines in Chinook salmon and steelhead trout, The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has proposed diverting an additional 25 million gallons of water per day from the River (enough to fill 1,000 swimming pools every day). With more than half of the Tuolumne already diverted for urban and agricultural uses, it’s time to focus major attention on water conservation, efficiency and recycling.

Lecture/Slideshow and musical performances on ukelele
Learn about the Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 in San Francisco’s Marina District.
Only the Palace of Fine Arts remains, and it is now undergoing renovation.
The Hawaii Pavilion at the 1915 Exposition introduced the ukulele and the music of Hawaii to the world.
Ka’ala Carmack, Honolulu-born, is an accomplished musician and singer. He is the founder and instructor of the ukulele and Hawaiian singing ensemble J-Town Hui, and will perform songs with many of his students.
If the audience had been able to squeeze into the Hawaii Pavilion 92 years ago, this is the music they might have heard!

Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 with Nancy DeStefanis
