Forgotten Fire Victims Press Conference
On October 27, Border Angels and Mexican American Poets Association held a press conference to talk about San Diego's forgotten fire victims, the migrant workers, families and others ignored by the official response to the wildfires that hit Southern California two weeks ago.
Speakers talked about the racism inherent in the differential response to white and brown victims, how the border patrol stepped up their terror campaign during the fires, how the sdpd and sheriffs were working hand-in-hand with the border patrol in checking documents and impeding aid to rural san diego, and how the solidarity that folks feel for victims of the 'natural disaster' that was the fires is different from the solidarity they feel for victims of the human-caused tragedy in Iraq.
