Quit Torture Teach-In & Vigil, aka CAMP BOLIO 2007, Nov. 16-18

by peacemonterey.org
November 16, 17, 18
A three-day protest in Monterey, California.
Concurrent with the SOA Watch protest of the School of the Americas at Ft. Benning, GA

What is the Quit Torture Teach-in & Vigil?

In November of 2006 a group of local activists gathered at the Pvt. Bolio Road entrance to the Presidio of Monterey for three days of signs and songs to draw attention to the issue of government complicity in the use of torture.

They selected this location because the Presidio of Monterey is the home of the Defense Language Institute, and graduates from this facility may at times be called upon to act as interpreters in situations where a detainee is being mistreated, or tortured.

They chose the dates in November so that Camp Bolio would run concurrent with the huge gathering at Fort Benning, Georgia, where activists protest the existence of the infamous School of the Americas, and the SOA's practice of instructing soldiers from other countries in the techniques of torture.

The first Camp Bolio was so inspiring, invigorating, and fun, that participants demanded a repeat. This time will include a slate of speakers and activities.

Although there are no fees, donations are welcome.

Join us to call for a closure of the School of the Americas and an end to torture as we gather at Camp Bolio again this year in solidarity with the vigil outside Ft. Benning Georgia.

The Direct Action Task Force Against Torture! (DATFAT) is planning this vigil which is sponsored now by Monterey's Branch of the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom, the Peace Coalition of Monterey County, and FOLKS like you!

We have a resident cook lined up, a workshop on Non-violent action, a speaker on the History of Water Boarding, Two singing groups so far, one speaker on the economics of war and democracy, with many other workshops topics and presenters being worked out.

On Sunday we plan a silent circle where all are welcome. We invite you to come forward and suggest your special topic as we plan for this educational and outspoken weekend.

This is not to be missed, put it on your calendars now and plan to come for all three days of just part of the time. You're welcome to drop in for coffee and conversation anytime.
