**** RALLY TO STOP THE PROPOSED BP-UC DEAL
**** 11:30 am THIS THURSDAY, October 4th
**** at KROEBER FOUNTAIN (college and bancroft)

Please turn out to protest UC's proposed deal with the oil giant,
British Petroleum. Do it for academic freedom, to promote
democratic decision making at OUR university, and to DEMAND
research for the public good, not for corporate profit.

We need your help to turn out as many people as possible!!!!!

Background: Last semester, there was an outpouring of concern and
critique after we learned of the proposed partnership between a
transnational oil corporation and our UC Berkeley, which is one of the
nations leading PUBLIC universities. As concerned students and
community members we have been successful in postponing this deal. On
This October 4th and 5th, although the deal has yet to be signed and
its future is not certain, the Energy Biosciences Institute or EBI is
co-hosting a forum on the implications of Biofuels and the Search for
a Fuel of the Future. The EBI is the proposed entity that would be
formed as a result of the BP deal, and BP would hold the majority of
governing power. We oppose the BP-Berkeley agreement for three major
reasons:
* The undemocratic process by which it is being struck.
* The social and environmental consequences of this research.
* BP's control over the research agenda.
