The 39th annual Progressive Lawyering Day, sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, was held on September 15, 2007 at Golden Gate University. Banafsheh Akhlaghi, president and founder of the National Legal Sanctuary for Community Advancement (NLSCA), spoke on what it means to be a progressive lawyer after 9/11.
NLSCA is a San Francisco-based non-profit organization working on human rights and dignity for Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian peoples. Since 2001, Akhlaghi has provided legal aid and representation for over two thousand of victims of special registration, interrogation, immigration detention camps, disappearances, deportation, torture and other tactics of US "homeland security."
