RNs to Provide Healthcare Screenings Tonight At "SiCKO" Screening at Union Rescue Mission

by CalNurses (reposted)
Monday, June 25, 2007 : Registered nurse members of the California Nurses Association will conduct parking lot healthcare screenings tonight outside the Union Rescue Mission in downtown Los Angeles in conjunction with a special film screening with Michael Moore of his stunning new film, "SiCKO."
The RNs will examine vital signs, do blood pressure checks, and other basic health exams for some of the people who will be attending the showing of "SiCKO," a riveting documentary about the nation's healthcare crisis. The Union Rescue Mission is one of the stars of the film, shown for its advocacy and assistance for hospital patients dumped on skid row by area hospitals because they were unable to pay their medical bills.

When: Today, Monday, June 25, 2007
Time: 6 p.m.
Where: Union Rescue Mission, 545 South San Pedro St., Los Angeles

CNA and its national arm, the National Nurses Organizing Committee, have joined Moore in legislative briefings in Washington D.C. and Sacramento, at a town hall meeting for undecided voters in New Hampshire, and at other events across the U.S. calling for comprehensive healthcare reform in response to the problems depicted by the film.

"The scandalous treatment of low-income Los Angeles patients ruthlessly discarded by local hospitals symbolizes what is wrong with our healthcare system," said Jill Furillo, RN. "At a time when unpayable medical debt accounts for half of all personal bankruptcies and one-third of all credit card debt, it could be any one of us who are being thrown out on the mean streets by heartless healthcare corporations."
