G8 - Police Shut down immigration march
Police stopped an immigration march today, surrounding it with riot ccops and water canons.
Leaving Reddelich early in the morning, about 150 demonstrators boarded a train to attend the march. Upod exiting, the protestors were immediately encircled by riot police and were told that they couldnt be allowed to attend unless they showed id and allowed their bags to be searched.
before things progressed, the march, which had already left the convergence area, marched onto the tracks, which allowed the trapped protestors to jump the railing and join the demonstration.
The march reached the detention center, and several speeches were given concerning the situation. When the march began to leave, police continued to stop the march, citing security concerns saying thre were '500' violent demonstrators in the march, and that everyone had to unmask and drop their weapons saying that people had bottles and rocks. In truth, this was complete falacy, as it was obvious the 'black bloc' which has been a large part of the other protests, was not a significant part of this march.
Later, anothr group of protestors, whose train had been stopped, were forced onto busses by the police. The police then threatened to search the demonstrators, but later released them far away from the march. These demonstrators eventually meet up with the main group.
This coninued on and on, until the organizers called off the march, citing 'massive police provocation' as the cause. Demonstrators then dispersed to meet at the harbor, where the rally was planned to be held.
