Response: “Drought or no drought, we all must conserve water”
This is an op/ed in response to “Drought or no drought, we all must conserve water” that originally ran in the San Jose Mercury News on April 24th 2007. Although the everyday people need to conserve water it won't do much because such a small percentage of water is used domestically, most is used to support agriculture. In order to impact our already warming planet in a positive manner there must be a collective effort to conserve water and use it more efficiently.
In response to “Drought or no drought, we all must conserve water” (Tuesday, April 24, 2007) I would like to remind the public that the majority of fresh water is not used domestically by the public but rather by industry such as agriculture. Although it is important to do what we can to conserve water, what we can do isn’t much compared to the amount of water big corporations and farmers waste with there inefficient use in agriculture. Global warming is happening. The Sierra Nevada snow pack, California’s major water reserve, continues to shrink every year. Everyone should conserve water, and everyone knows that; however people continue to waste. It’s the way people think of water as an infinite natural resource, and inability to think beyond ones dry front lawn that leads to wasteful habits. But fixing leaky faucets only goes so far. The way to truly postpone the effects of the destruction we’ve imposed on our now warming planet is a collective effort between environmentalists, industries, governments and everyday people to change our current water habits and un-environmentally friendly ways. This includes the excessive burning of fossil fuels, clear-cutting of forest, wasting of freshwater, unsustainable living habits, and well, the list could go on and on. There are so many things we need to do but we can’t do it alone.
