UCSC-May 9th Anti-Iraq War Protest

by Waleed Salaheldin
– Students of the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) will be protesting the United States’ occupation of Iraq on May 9, 2007. This protest is organized by a group of students known as the Protest Mediation Council (PMC) and is supported by a wide range of student organizations on campus that hope to bring much needed visibility to the protest movement and educate the Santa Cruz community about the prolonged conflict in Iraq.
My name is Waleed Salaheldin and I am a member of the Protest Mediation Council (PMC) along with Nathan Ellstrand, Shawn Harris and Khalid Salaheldin. We formed this group solely to organize protests that are supported by all parts of the community, showing unity against certain issues. The May 9th Protest is demonstrating the position of students against the Iraq War, calling for withdrawal of US Troops within a year.

The unique aspect of this protest is that it is to be a peaceful demonstration of our views as students. To insure this, we as the PMC have met with the UCSC administration (Assistant Chancellor, Dean of Students and UCSC Chief of Police) and gained their approval and support of the protest. Since this event is aimed to amplify the voice of the students, our biggest task is letting the students of UCSC know about the event. One way we wish to do that is to pull in the support of all the student orgs on campus. As of now, we have been endorsed by over 20 student organizations, UC-AFT Local: 2199, the United Nations Association, the UCSC Admin (Assistant Chancellor /Chief of Staff Ashish Sahni, Assistant Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students Alma Sifuentes and Chief of UCSC Police Michael A. Aluffi) as well as a growing number of individuals independent of any student organization. While we aim to amplify the voices of the students, we will also have student organizations passing out information on different causes going on, broadening the political, economic and social spectrum of all attendees of this protest on May 9th.

This event will also be what we as the Protest Mediation Council call a mass-education event. What we ask of you is; as much publicity support as possible. If you could please contact me with any questions you have about this event. We look forward to working with all of you, in order to unite this campus as whole, and hopefully cause the spark for a necessary nation-wide movement.
