Peace Mom Cindy Sheehan will join
Peace-In at Rep. Doris Matsui office
on Monday; Protest begins third week
SACRAMENTO – Peace mom Cindy Sheehan – who lost her son to the war in Iraq
– has revealed plans to make a personal visit to the Federal Courthouse
offices of Rep. Doris Matsui Monday in support of a "Peace-In" that begins
it's third week.
Cindy will hold a news conference and rally at 10 a.m. Monday at the
Federal Courthouse (501 I St.) and then personally deliver a letter to the
Matsui staff.
Monday marks Day 10, and the beginning of the third straight week of the
"Peace-In" by the Sacramento Coalition to End the War. Those advocating an
end to the war have held a "sit-in" daily from the time the office opens
until 5 p.m., waiting for Rep. Matsui to publicly commit to vote against
any additional funding for the war in Iraq.
She has, so far, refused, and is attempting to politicize the request, said
the Coalition.
"At least 20 Americans died Saturday alone in the war. Every day Rep.
Matsui insists on playing politics, and making this a partisan debate, is
another day our troops are at risk. She says she is opposed to the war. We
want her to now do something about it," said Coalition spokesperson and
Veterans for Peace local president George Main.
The Coalition also noted Rep. Matsui has co-sponsored a resolution with
Rep. John Murtha (HJR 18) calling for the President to bring troops home.
But, the Coalition said the resolution means next to nothing because it is
nonbinding, while a commitment to vote against new funding for the war is
something a new, Democratic Party-led Congress can do.
"Does Rep. Matsui really support our troops and support bringing them home?
If she does, why won't she publicly state she won't vote for any further
funding for the war? The $70 billion budgeted for 2007 is enough to provide
them armor, and bring them home," said Main.
