As you know by now, we are still showing guerilla films -- indoors for the wet and chilly winter -- at the bike church downtown. They are monthly, and since we haven't posted the winter series yet to the website, you'll just have to come to this week's movie to get a printed schedule for your fridge. See you there!

THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS

Friday January 12th, 8:00pm
Bike Church, 703 Pacific Ave, Santa Cruz
Always free!

A gripping, extraordinary, 1966 documentary-style depiction of the Algerian's people's struggle to liberate themselves from France. The film creates a stunning illusion of realism by combining newsreel footage with staged sequences featuring amateur and professional actors playing characters based on real people. The Battle of Algiers is considered the quintessential film study of an insurgency against capitalist suppression. This fact led to the film being banned in France upon its release for fear of creating civil disturbances. More recently a screening of the film took place for Special Operations at the Pentagon on August 27, 2003 to prepare them for what they might expect during the war in Iraq. This film is also highly relevant in light of the inspiring recent uprisings still taking place in Algeria now.

PLUS brilliant and funny shorts, an intermission, bike church kidz, and great company.

BRING low folding chairs, blankets, pillows, friends, wine, & food to share for intermission. Donations are greatly appreciated and directly support the project. If you bring folding chairs, please set up in back so others may see.

SANTA CRUZ GUERILLA DRIVE-IN is an outdoor movie theatre under the stars that springs up in the fields and industrial wastelands. Beyond showing great movies and bringing a broad community together, part of our mission is helping reclaim public space and transforming our urban environment into the joyful playground it should be.
