Human "IMPEACH!" sign at SF's Ocean Beach
Over 1,000 people converged at San Francisco's Ocean Beach this morning to form a giant human "IMPEACH!" sign--a message from the people to Bush and Cheney.
"I'm 11, I am here from El Salvador, where my family hates Bush because he is a killer," said one of over 1,000 participants in this morning’s “Beach Impeach” action.
People converged on ocean beach to spell out the word “IMPEACH!” with their bodies in huge letters as a helicopter flew overhead. Code Pink gave out brownies and oranges, people cheered and jeered as they positioned themselves in giant letters drawn in the sand that were barely legible from the ground.
“I took the bus here, and I live withing walking distance from the work,” said one participant. “I think that that is as important as voting or taking a position against Bush, because the power of the oil industry is one of the only reasons that such an unpopular president could still be wielding power.”
Event organizer Brad Newsham, a taxi driver from Oakland, said that the movement to oust George W. Bush “needs a visual image.”
“I think it went really well,” added Newsham after a helicopter had passed over the diverse crowd of Bush-loathers. “We need to let these people know what the people feel and we need to stand up for what we believe in. We need to hold ourselves accountable for the things we’ve done as a nation, and the only way to do that is by holding our leaders accountable.”
