San Francisco day laborers gather to denounce recent immigration raids, to
discuss immigrants' conditions in the U.S.
Press conference will be followed by an annual holiday celebration.

On Thursday, December 21, 2006, at 10 am, at the San Francisco Day Labor
Program, 3358 Cesar Chavez St., hundreds of the city's day laborers will
gather for a press conference to denounce the recent immigration raids that
took place in various states.

A few days ago, homeland security agents swept into Swift and Company
meatpacking plants in six states and arrested nearly 1,300 workers, almost
10 percent of the company's work force, in what was the largest workplace
raid in the country's history.

The day laborers will discuss their situations and conditions as immigrant
workers in this country.

"As day laborers, we are in the middle of the current immigration debate,"
states Julio Loyola, a day laborer and member of the San Francisco Day Labor
Program. "We come to this country to work, but we continue to be
scapegoated and terrorized through these raids."

After the press conference, the workers will cross the street to St.
Anthony's Church and hold their annual holiday party from 12 to 2 pm. The
party is being co-sponsored by the SF Day Labor Program and Dolores Street
Community Services.
