Business Owners & Leaders Announce Opposition to Arena Tax

Small business owners and representatives from across Sacramento County announced their opposition to Measures Q & R in front of a downtown small business that has been forced to close due to misguided City redevelopment policies. Locally owned businesses like Tex-Mex on 8th Street are being driven out of downtown at the same time that the City and County are giving away the store to out of town developers and billionaire sports team owners and giving them veto power over what businesses can be located near the proposed arena.

“My successful minority woman owned local small business has been driven out of downtown by the City at the same time that they are giving control of the proposed arena development to out of town developers and billionaire sports team owners who may not allow me to move my business to the new development because it would be an incompatible use,” stated Norma Barajas, Tex-Mex Restaurant.

Event participants which included Katherine Maestas; Norma Barajas, Tex-Mex Restaurant; Marcia Fritz, Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce; John Rueda, Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee; Joe Chasko, Tred-Mill Tire Mart & Folsom Blvd Business & Property Association; and a representative of Vallejo’s Restaurant. Attendees also distributed Six Dollar Burgers to highlight the Maloofs TV ad for the hamburger chain living the high life in Las Vegas.

“Measures Q & R are a bad deal for Sacramento and there is no guarantee that communities like Citrus Heights, Elk Grove or Rancho Cordova will see any of the benefits of the tax increase,” stated Marcia Fritz, Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce. “Our communities face important issues like healthcare, increasing funding for schools, making our streets safer, which we need to address before we raise taxes for 15 years to build an arena for billionaire sports team owners who can afford to build it themselves.”

Measures Q & R (The Arena Tax) will increase the sales tax in Sacramento County to raise $562 million to build a sports and entertainment facility. The public pays nearly 100% of the cost of the new arena, and does not receive any of the revenues from naming rights, parking, concessions, or tickets for concerts or sporting events. If approved, none of the additional sales tax dollars will be available for desperately-needed community projects for at least 7 years after construction of the arena has been completed. Community leaders and elected officials from all over Sacramento County agree that public dollars should not be used to subsidize billionaire sports team owners when basic community needs such as flood control, public safety, education, housing and healthcare must be addressed first.
