3000 in SF say Drive Out the Bush Regime
Yesterday thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds marched in the pouring rain through the streets of San Francisco as part of a nationwide day of protest. Students from all over the Bay Area walked out of school, many in the face of threats of suspension. Their message was clear: "The Bush Regime is setting out to radically remake society very quickly, in a fascist way, and for generations to come. We must act now; the future is in the balance."
The unprecedented 24 hour demonstration in San Francisco organized by World Can't Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime included two rallies, a march down Market Street, the jailing of a 40 foot statue of Bush, and an all-night vigil in Justin Herman Plaza.
The protest went forward against attempts to suppress it. World Can't Wait and its supporters applied for all necessary permits and negotiated in good faith with the San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco city officials for permits to march and to rally. After first refusing a march permit, giving the reason of "homeland security" the SFPD backed down and granted the march permit. But at the main permitted rally yesterday as speakers, poets and rappers prepared to begin the program the city cut the power. As our call states, "If we speak the truth, they will try to silence us." And that is precisely what the City of San Francisco tried unsuccessfully to do yesterday. In spite of the actions of the City of San Francisco the rally went forward with improvised sound and was broadcast live on radio station KPFA.
World Can't Wait will hold an important meeting on October 14 and calls on the public to attend.

Actions to Drive Out the Bush Regime occurred from coast to coast on October 5 in over 200 locations. Several thousand took to the streets in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, hundreds acted in cities such as Tucson, Portland, Atlanta, and Austin, and in many small towns and cities scores of people went to intersections, town centers, local beaches, and wherever they thought they would reach the most people in their areas with the message that This Regime Does Not Represent Us and We Will Drive it Out.
Across the country, people young and old showed the heart and courage to confront the reality of the fascistic and war mongering direction the Bush Regime has been driving this country and the entire world. Together, we made a powerful and precious political statement - one that is being debated and seriously considered but that must still be acted on by people in a more massive way to actually shift the political dynamics in this country. The thousands who acted are the nucleus of a spreading movement that must now go on and win the argument with those who still are on the sidelines. Where Bush's whole agenda is repudiated and he and his Regime must leave office in disgrace. THE WORLD CAN'T WAIT, DRIVE OUT THE BUSH REGIME!
